Vision Statement

Carter G. Woodson High School is a community that embraces diversity in a culture of improvement and success that promotes academic curiosity and individual mental and physical growth.

Message from Mr. Greata

We have several important thank-yous to share this week, starting with a huge expression of gratitude to our entire community for taking the time to complete the Impact Aid form. I am pleased to share that we now have the highest online completion rate of any high school in Fairfax County—an incredible achievement. Thank you for supporting our school and the many families who directly benefit from your efforts.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the wonderfully generous organization Asha Jyothi, whose support has made it possible for our orchestra to present the Music: Not Impossible technology at the upcoming Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Conference this Friday. Their generosity not only enhances opportunities for our own students, but also brings broader awareness to this important accessibility tool—one that has the potential to impact thousands of students across the Commonwealth.

This past week, several of our students attended the HBCU College Fair at Edison High School. Thank you to Darlene Sheppard, Christine Lieb-Mosley, and Shameka Brantley for organizing and accompanying our students, and congratulations to Jaden Nicholson for receiving on-site admission to the University of the District of Columbia! Well done!

Congratulations as well to our boys volleyball team, who won their state quarterfinal match this past Saturday. The energy in the gym was incredible! We look forward to cheering them on as they compete in the state semifinal match this Tuesday at 5:00 PM, right here at Carter G. Woodson High School. With a victory, they will advance to the state championship match on Saturday at Virginia State University.

Looking ahead, we have our PTO meeting on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 PM, which will be held virtually. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Grocery Gift Card Drive. If you’d still like to participate, please visit this link.

Weekly Wrap Up

🖥️New Parent Controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal

  • FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
  • These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day. Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
  • For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Federal Impact Aid Form

FCPS is asking all families, regardless if you are affiliated with the military or work on Federal Property, to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!

  • Your student will receive a pass to leave class at the time you specify.

  • You won't need to come inside the school; your student will simply come out to meet you.

Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!

For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
