Message from Mr. Greata

On behalf of Carter G. Woodson High School, I want to extend my sincerest thanks for the dedication and service of our community’s veterans as we observe Veterans Day tomorrow, November 11.

Veterans Day holds deep significance as it marks the armistice that ended the hostilities of World War I. The sacrifices and service of our veterans not only preserve our freedoms and way of life, but also form the cornerstone of our American culture. Beyond their service, our veterans provide all of us—especially our young people—with powerful examples of hard work, selflessness, and devotion to country.

At Carter G. Woodson High School, we recognize that these sacrifices are shared by veterans’ families as well. Nearly 10% of our students come from military-connected families, and we take great pride in supporting them. Today, we held our annual Military-Connected Families Breakfast, where we had the opportunity to thank these families in person and celebrate their service. I am proud to share that we have once again earned the distinction of being recognized as a Purple Star School—for the third time!

A special thank you to Bryce benson, Joel Fudge, Lizzie Walter, Alaina Andersen, Brooke Metrinko, Josh Peters for their leadership and dedication in supporting our military-connected students and families. They will be recognized at the upcoming School Board Meeting on Thursday, November 13.

Today we also welcomed more than 50 volunteers for our annual Career Day. Thank you to all who shared their time, stories, and expertise with our students—your impact was tremendous. I had the opportunity to speak with several students afterward and ask what inspired them most and what they hope to do in the future. You can hear some of their responses on this week’s Podcast.

A huge thank you to Christine Lieb-Mosley, Megan Pitts, Paula DiSalvo, and Josh Peters for their incredible work in organizing this event and making it such a success.

Last Friday, we celebrated our seniors from the football team, cheer team, dance team, and band during Senior Night. Thank you to all the families who came out to honor their students’ hard work and dedication.

We also kicked off the first weekend of our fall play, Tartuffe, adapted by our very own Chris Rushing. The performance is both thought-provoking and hilarious—I highly recommend seeing it this coming weekend:

  • Friday, November 14 at 7:00 PM
  • Saturday, November 15 at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Our boys volleyball team continues their incredible run, competing in the Regional Final this Wednesday at West Springfield at 7:00 PM. Regardless of the outcome, they’ve secured a spot in the State Quarterfinal vs. Lake Braddock—right here at Carter G. Woodson High School on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

We’ve recently seen an increase in requests from students accessing the Cav Cupboard, our school food pantry. This reflects a growing need across our community, and we’re asking for your help in supporting our families.

Donations can be made through the PTSO or My School Bucks. Please see the information posted below for details on how to contribute. Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help our families in need.

As we honor our veterans tomorrow, please remember that there will be no school on Tuesday, November 11.

Thank you for all you do to make Carter G. Woodson High School such a strong and caring community. I wish you a wonderful week ahead.

Federal Impact Aid Form

FCPS is asking all families, regardless if you are affiliated with the military or work on Federal Property, to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!

  • Your student will receive a pass to leave class at the time you specify.

  • You won't need to come inside the school; your student will simply come out to meet you.

Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!

For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

College and Career Center

Counselors once again visited freshmen recently through their Social Studies classes to discuss a variety of resources. Naviance is a platform that allows students to take assessments for career exploration, research potential colleges, and log services hours through x2vol

Additionally, we reviewed helpful resources on the Woodson Student Services padlet, highlighting the Freshman padlet, College & Career Center padlet, Extracurriculars padlet, and Career Center Events padlet

Seniors! If you receive an email from college(s) you applied to saying that they have not received your transcript, please check your Common App account first to see the date it was submitted and if the college downloaded it. Afterward, please follow up with the college directly. You should not wait to submit your application(s); your recommenders will submit their information separately.

Now that Quarter 2 is in process, please use the resources on the Academic Supports padlet. The class change period closed on September 8th, so students struggling in a class should speak directly with their teacher as a first step.
