Kings Park Families,
It was a privilege to honor over 100 veterans and military-connected family members during Monday’s Veterans Day Celebration and Honor Walk. Highlights of the celebration included Cub Council leadership, patriotic performances and a photo slideshow honoring veterans in our community. The slideshow can be viewed here.
As Family Engagement Month continues, we’re looking forward to next week’s Art Open House, Meet Me at the Library, and Thanksgiving Luncheon events. We know family schedules are busy and strive to provide a range of opportunities throughout the year to help all families stay connected and engaged with our school community.

Meet Me at the Library - Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025
Meet us in the Community Meeting Room of the Kings Park Public Library (9000 Burke Lake Rd, Burke, VA 22015) next Tuesday, November 18th, at 5:00pm, for the first Meet Me at the Library event of the school year.
This hour-long event is free to Kings Park students, run by Kings Park teachers and staff and will showcase fun ways to promote healthy eating habits and exercise. Every student that attends will receive a free book from WETA. Hope to see you there!
Thanksgiving Luncheon
Many volunteers are needed to help Kings Park’s Thanksgiving Luncheon event on Friday, November 21st, run smoothly. Please review the Thanksgiving luncheon schedule and sign up as you are able to volunteer.
Please note, the response deadline for KPES’s Thanksgiving Luncheon has passed and with over 611 guests plus our 680+ students and 1300 meals to be served, we have reached our space limitations and are unable to accept additional responses or guests at this event. Were you hopeful to come and be a part of fun? Consider signing up to volunteer and be an integral part of the KPES Thanksgiving Luncheon experience.
Specialist Open Houses
Art: November 17th-21st
Come join us in the art studio during your child's regularly scheduled art class next week (November 17th- 21st) and enjoy an art class with your young artist. Guests will join in with our creative process and learn more about the art making process. Parents should please check in with the office before coming to the art rooms. Reach out to your classroom teacher or our art teachers, Mrs. Vasudevan (Ms. Vidya) and Mrs. Hagan, if you have questions.
PE and Music: December 1st-5th
We invite you to join your child for their PE and Music classes during the week of December 1st–5th. You’ll have the chance to experience a typical class and participate alongside your student. Specific dates and times will be shared through TalkingPoints and in your child’s teacher’s weekly email. We look forward to seeing you - please remember to bring your photo ID for check-in at the front office.
Kings Park Book Fair: December 3rd - December 12th
Kings Park is excited to host our winter book fair from December 3rd – December 12th. Our fair will be set up the afternoon of December 3rd. Students will preview the fair with their classes from December 4th – December 8th and will have the option to shop from December 9th – December 12th. More information about shopping to come!
Our fair would not be possible without the support of our amazing volunteers. We are seeking the help of volunteers to help set up and take down our book fair as well as assist students as they preview and shop. If you are able to volunteer your time for our fair please sign up here. Volunteers must have registered with Volunteer FCPS. Thank you for your support.
Volunteer FCPS Registration Update
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.
📚 Finishing Up Uncovering Characters in Language Arts 📚
Benchmark Unit 2 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about different characters in stories and their own personal sense of character.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: How does the way you act change the way you think about yourself?
- Activity: Draw a new cover for a favorite book featuring the main character in a key moment.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Apply Anytime for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.
If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year.
Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s a great way to make your food budget go further and save time from packing meals. Learn more about FCPS Food and Nutrition.
Kings Park ES Gift Card Drive
As the weather cools and we head into this season of gratitude, we are reaching out to ask for your help. We are currently collecting gift cards to assist Kings Park ES families in need. Gift cards to Giant, Safeway, Walmart, and Target will go directly to families of students facing food insecurity and/or requiring assistance with basic necessities and seasonal support. Even small donations can make a big impact.
Gift cards are being collected now through December 12th. They can be dropped off in a box in the front office or sent with your child in an envelope attention: School Counselors or School Social Worker. We are thankful to have such a generous and caring community and truly appreciate your support!
Questions? Does your family need support? Please contact social worker Katie Carroll kcarroll3@fcps.edu, family liaison Cinthia Loza, csloza@fcps.edu, or school counselors Corri Shusterman, rcshusterman@fcps.edu, and Tracy Rossi, tlrossi@fcps.edu.
