Lees Corner Families,
As we head into Quarter 2, we are making an adjustment to support your child’s learning both in school and at home. Following FCPS’ implementation, Lees Corner is adopting a consistent homework plan for elementary students, as discussed at Back to School Night.
Learning continues after school, and establishing small, consistent routines at home builds strong, lifelong habits. This shift is designed to help students build essential skills and give you a simple look at the learning happening in the classroom.
Appropriate practice at home has significant benefits for elementary students (K-6): it reinforces lessons, helping solidify what students learn; it builds key habits like responsibility and time management; it boosts reading (daily reading is key); and it strengthens our school-home partnership.
You can expect assignments to be manageable, purposeful, and directly linked to classroom work. The main goal is practice, and student effort will be reflected in the Life, Work, and Citizenship Skills section of their report card.
Teachers will communicate and send home clear instructions to help you support your child's independence; homework should not feel stressful or overwhelming. Your child’s teacher will share more detailed grade-level plans very soon.
We are excited to partner with you on this step to support your student’s continued success and skill development. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions.
Best Regards,
Ms. Sloan & Ms. Hutchinson

Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. National School Psychology Week

This week we celebrate the important work school psychologists do to help all students thrive. We want to send a special thanks to our wonderful school psychologist, Camille Baguley, for her incredible dedication to supporting our students' emotional and academic well-being. She plays such a vital role in helping our school community thrive, and her guidance is deeply appreciated by our students and staff. Thank you, Ms. Baguley, for being an essential part of our team! SCA is partnering with our school Kindness Ambassadors to celebrate World Kindness Week between November 10th-14th! Our next spirit day will take place on Wednesday, November 12th, where we encourage students and staff to wear shirts with positive messages. We can’t wait to support one another by spreading words of kindness and empathy!
As a parent, you might be wondering what apps and games are age-appropriate for your child. How can you help your child enjoy technology and media in a safe way? FCPS recommends a four-pronged approach for supporting children. This approach will help your child become a smart, safe and balanced user of technology. Parents using the four-pronged approach will:
- Establish expectations by developing and enforcing media and device plans.
- Select and use age-appropriate media (games, apps, videos, books, and other media types).
- Use parental controls to set limits.
- Support your child’s technology use by using it with them.
Find resources and tools that can help you develop a plan to support your child’s technology use at home by visiting FCPS’s Digital Citizenship: Establishing Expectations at Home webpage. [https://www.fcps.edu/services/technology/digital-citizenship-guidance-technology-use/establishing-expectations-home]
The Lees Corner Elementary School Harvest Lunch is happening on Thursday, November 20th, during your student's modified lunch time listed below.
If you plan to attend lunch with your child that day you will need to bring your driver’s license to check in at the main office. Enter door 1 and proceed to the visitor check-in line located in the hallway near the main office.
You will also need to bring exact cash. We cannot accept any other forms of payment. The cost for adults and for non-FCPS enrolled students is $5.00. The cost for FCPS enrolled students is $3.25.
Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now that will help them graduate on time and help them with time management. Parents and families can play a big role in helping kick-start good attendance habits.
Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Visit our Attendance webpage for more information.
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students. Lees Corner is happy to offer the opportunity for students to be placed on a team. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade may participate. The regional tournament will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Go here for the problem synopses for this season.
