Message from Mrs. Briggs
Dear Spring Hill Families,
Thank you all for your incredible support of this year's Boosterthon! Thanks to your generous contributions, we raised over $60,000 and now have a fantastic opportunity to invest these funds back into our school environment.
We have been working closely with FCPS and the Office of Safety & Security. FCPS will be funding external cameras and a front vestibule (should all be installed by the end of the Summer of 2026). This is fantastic news! We also just found out that our back fence will be funded by FCPS. The installation date has not yet been determined, but I feel confident that these additional safety measures will be important additions to our campus.
As we look ahead at how our Boosterthon funds should be allocated, we believe this decision should be a community one, as both options will significantly enhance the experience for our students. Please review the two exciting proposals below and help us decide where to allocate the funds:
Option 1: A Permanent Outdoor Pavilion
This option would replace our current, worn-out tent with a durable, permanent structure in our outdoor area.
| Benefit |
Description |
| Safety & Durability |
Provides reliable, year-round shade and shelter from sun and rain, reducing exposure to the elements during outdoor activities and lunch. |
| Enhanced Outdoor Learning |
Creates a dedicated, covered space for outdoor lessons, science labs, reading circles, and grade-level gatherings, extending instructional time outside the classroom walls. |
| Community Gathering Hub |
Offers a protected area for school events, picnics, and community functions, serving as a long-term asset for the entire school community. |
Option 2: An Innovative Learning Space for Our Large Pod
This option focuses on transforming a large interior space (our large pod/common area) into a flexible, cutting-edge learning environment.
| Benefit |
Description |
| 21st Century Learning |
Will be designed with modular, flexible furniture, technology integration, and collaborative zones to support critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity |
| Differentiated Learning |
Allows teachers to easily reconfigure the space for varied activities, from large group instruction to small, focused centers, addressing diverse student interests and learning styles. |
| Promotes Engagement & Choice |
Provides students with a choice in how and where they learn (different seating, lighting, and zones), which is proven to increase engagement and ownership of their education. |
🗳️ We Need Your Vote!
Your input is essential in making a decision that best serves our students and community.

Thank you for helping us make Spring Hill Elementary the best place to learn and grow!

IMPACT AID - ONLINE NOW
The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available to complete online.
The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:
- Military families.
- Federally connected families.
- Families living on a military base.
Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the ‘enrolling parent’) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.
For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.
Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.
To access the Impact Aid Form from your computer or mobile device, we recommend using Google Chrome.
Step 1: CLICK HERE or type sisparent.fcps.edu into your Chrome address bar to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.
Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.
Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button at the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.
If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page and see a green check next to each of their names.
For questions, please email Denise Barber at DBarber@fcps.edu
Apply Anytime for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.
If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year.
Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s a great way to make your food budget go further and save time from packing meals. Learn more about FCPS Food and Nutrition.
Impact of Federal Shutdown on Local CommunityFairfax County is home to around 80,000 federal employees and thousands of federal contractors. Its Federal Workforce Resource Hub is intended to help navigate current and future issues for residents, government employees, active military/veterans, contractors, nonprofits, and businesses who may be affected by actions, changes, or disruptions to federal services or employment.

Spelling Bee
Students who are interested in participating in this year’s Spelling Bee will need to sign up for a time to test with Mrs. Roman and Mr. Garris. Students who wish “try out” for the Spelling Bee will be gathered at door 9 by Kiss and Ride between 8:15 and 8:25am. This written spelling test will begin sharply at 8:30. Signup sheets are posted outside of Mrs. Roman’s door. Each testing session will be capped at 25 students. If more testing dates are needed, we can/will add them. 6th grade is filling up quickly, it is likely a 3rd date will be added in December.
6th Grade test days will be Wednesday, November 12, and Thursday, November 13
5th Grade test days will be Tuesday, November 18, and Wednesday, November 19
4th Grade test days will be Tuesday, December 2, and Wednesday, December 3
There are 18 participant spots for students grade 4-6 in this year’s Spelling Bee. Please note, neither grade level nor class will be a determining factor for participation. Participants will be announced on the Morning Show the week of December 11th. Study materials will be passed out at that time.
The Spring Hill Spelling Bee will be held 2:00pm, February 27, 2026. Viewing of the Spelling Bee will be closed to a live audience. A live streaming link will be sent closer to the date.

Trex Community Challenge – Trex bins have been delivered, and reminder magnets are on the way to you! Oldest and only children are being sent home with a magnet displaying the plastic we can now recycle. We have 3 collection bins; the first is directly to the right of the Main Office door in the Lobby. The second is in the 2nd grade small pod, and the 3rd is just inside door 7 in the back.
We are looking to collect/divert 1,000 lbs. of plastic from landfills before the end of the school year. The attached list and link show the vast new plastic you can recycle with us at SHES. If need be, give your plastic a quick rinse or wipe down, set out a bag for your family to collect your plastic and send it to school!
Once we have collected and turned in our 1,000 lbs., we will be gifted a new Trex park bench for our new garden that will be built this Spring on Kiss and Ride side of the track. PLEASE help us recycle as much plastic as possible!
We need some helpful parents to pick up the recycling and deliver it to your local grocery store. This is literally all that need to be done. Take it to the grocery store and shove it in their recycling bin and go about your shopping trip. Students will weigh and record the numbers at school. If you are interested in helping with plastic drop off’s, please reach out to Kendra Roman; krroman@fcps.edu.
3 – 6 Culture Garden Construction Coming 2026
For two years we have been planning to build a Culture Garden in front of the Kiss and Ride lot. Be on the lookout for some fun community events leading up to the construction of our new garden. If you would like to join us in planning, growing, and/or dreaming our new garden into exitance, please reach out to your classroom teacher or Kendra Roman to ask how you can help
STEAM Updates
SAVE THE DATE! We will be hosting our 2nd annual STEAM NIGHT/ Science Fair. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a ….” We are excited to add another layer to the event “+ Literacy,” The event will be Wednesday, March 18, 2026, 4:00-7:00pm. If you are interested in volunteering to help plan and organize, please reach out to Kendra Roman krroman@fcps.edu.
This quarter there are a ton of fun things happening in STEAM. Kindergarten – 3rd grades are have been engaging in Nature Mandas where they are learning Math concepts (counting, shapes, symmetry), Science concepts (sorting, classifying, seeds, exoskeletons, and MUCH more), mindfulness, quiet introspection, respect for nature, all while engineering beautiful art. I hope your families can take some screen free time this fall to seek out interesting outdoor materials and make your own nature Mandalas in nature.
Sixth graders are building rollercoasters. They are putting to use their 5th grade Force and Motion knowledge to use in keeping a marble in it’s tracks as it does loops, swirls, and hills.
Immunization Events for FCPS Students

🎤 Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division to discuss current challenges and future opportunities. These events are also a chance for you to share your thoughts and ask questions about FCPS. Events are planned for the following dates from 6 to 8 p.m.:
- Tuesday, December 9
- Thursday, December 11
Volunteer Registration Update
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.
Tutoring Resources for Families
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The FCPS Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as tutors. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not approved by FCPS and is only meant to be a resource to families.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
SIS ParentVUE End-of-Quarter Closure
The Gradebook in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed for the end of the first quarter from Friday, October 31, at 4 p.m. to Monday, November 10, at 6 a.m. Activate your ParentVUE account to easily access grade reports.
