Virginia SOL:
⚠️Student Impact: Important Information About Virginia SOL Changes and Accountability
It is important that families are aware of the startling impact that new SOL cut scores (what number indicates proficiency in a subject) will have on our students. When looking at FCPS pass rates, 26% of our students who passed their math SOL in the spring of 2025 would no longer be considered passing if they took the same test with these new cut scores. For reading, it’s 28% fewer students.
During the October 23 School Board meeting, Dr. Reid shared some of the impacts that the Virginia Board of Education’s proposed changes will have on our students.
For our students in younger grades, these changes signal that their achievement now falls short, which can harm their beliefs about themselves as learners and future school success.
These changes aren’t about raising expectations for our children, they simply move the finish line for students. Raising expectations means we change the learning experience for our students, something FCPS is deeply committed to as is evidenced by our focus on increasing access to high school mathematics courses in elementary and middle school and ensuring all students have access to rigorous high school courses that prepare them for the future.
The Virginia Board of Education will be taking action on the plan to implement the changes to cut scores on November 13. Community members are able to provide feedback on these changes through November 6.
The state will also host a listening session for families on November 5 from 5:30-6:30pm where you can share your thoughts. You can join the the listening session with this information:

Meeting ID: 230 998 444 924 3
Passcode: ui9mv9Nz
There are also several legislative changes that will take effect in the 2026-27 school year including additional requirements for SOL testing and requiring SOL testing results to count as a portion of the students final grade in middle and high school.
In addition to these cut score changes, the state is also changing how they measure schools. This means that many Virginia families will now see their schools marked as failing. Superintendent Reid explains more in this short video and greater detail can be found on the FCPS website.
We will continue to keep our community informed about these state changes that will have an impact on our students and our schools.
Impact Aid:
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. We will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For more information, visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
Register for ParentVUE
Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.
Technical support for using ParentVUE or submitting the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type “Federal Impact Aid Survey” in the Issue Description section. You may also call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).
Student MiFi Access:
The purpose of the MiFi devices is to provide internet access to students who do not currently have access at home. The MiFi devices provide a Mobile Hotspot for up to 5 devices allowing a connection to a filtered network configured to match the current filtering in place at FCPS.
Schools have mobile hotspot devices (MiFi) for checkout to students who have no internet access at home. These MiFis are intended to support school-related activities only, and include internet filtering that prevents recreational uses, including Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services.
This is available to all students as needed. Students can inform their teacher of the need and form outlining the acceptance of responsibility and home user agreement will need to be signed. Once this is complete a Mifi device will be issued to the student.

This week in the Liberty Library:
Library Spotlight!
One of our featured programs in the library, Battle of the Books, is in full swing! This in-school club meets weekly during Advisory as students prepare for a fun, fast-paced competition to see who knows this year’s books best. Each meeting includes creative, team-building activities that strengthen collaboration and communication. This week’s challenge had students using a mix of clues and charades to solve a mystery together, showing that teamwork and a love of reading make the perfect combination!
