Dear Woodley Hills Family,
What a wonderful start to the week it has been! Our Kindergarten Veterans Day Assembly was truly moving. It was a beautiful way to show our deep appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve our country. Their service and sacrifice ensure the freedoms we cherish, and we extend our most sincere thanks to all our veterans. Please remember there is no school tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11th, in observance of Veterans Day.
We look forward to seeing many of you later this week. Our next PTA meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 12th, at 6:00 PM in the Woodley Hills Library. The PTA does so much for our students, and this is a great chance to hear updates and share your ideas. We hope that all families can join us in person or virtually.
Another wonderful event happening this week is the Mount Vernon Pyramid Choral Concert. You can hear our talented students sing on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM at Mount Vernon High School. It’s always a fantastic evening showcasing the musical accomplishments of our students. Have a restful and meaningful holiday tomorrow, and we can’t wait to see you back on Wednesday!
Sincerely,
Dr. LaChelle R. Williams, Principal

Whether you can spare an hour or a day, your time and energy make a huge difference. Please consider signing up to volunteer—we can’t do it without you! If you can volunteer then please note that FCPS now requires ALL volunteers to register and apply on the new system Volunteer FCPS. So you would need to register online with FCPS and then sign-up at the WHES sign-up genius to pick a date and time. Thank you for taking the extra step to help out!
The Fair will be held December 1-5th. All classes will have time to shop during the school day. We will also be open for family shopping on Literacy Night, December 4th from 5:00-7:00pm. Can’t wait to see you there!

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. We will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For more information, visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
Register for ParentVUE
Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.
Technical support for using ParentVUE or submitting the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type “Federal Impact Aid Survey” in the Issue Description section. Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for All Learners
December 12, 10-11:30 a.m.
This presentation explores how trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning (SEL) support student well-being and academic success. We discuss the impact of stress and trauma on children, how it can manifest in their behavior, and the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments. We will highlight protective factors that foster student resilience and growth. Additionally, we will showcase helpful practices at school that teach and reinforce essential skills such as self-awareness, self-management, and relationship building. Finally, we will explore practical strategies families can use at home to strengthen these skills and nurture resilience in their children. Register here
Volunteer Registration Update
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.

Grades in Language Arts
You might notice that your student's progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) look a little different. This is happening because we've brought in a new curriculum and new ways to check on learning (assessments), and there are new state guidelines called the VDOE Standards of Learning.
FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the big skills they need by the very end of the school year. Think of it like going on a journey. It’s challenging at first, but on your journey, you learn your way — and maybe even a few shortcuts!
First quarter grades may seem lower than usual as students work hard to reach grade-level mastery.
Please know that this is a positive, expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they grow and achieve. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards!
