Dear Woodley Hills Family,

I'm feeling very thankful this week! I want to give a big thank you to our great students, staff, and families for making Principal Appreciation Month so wonderful for me. I loved everything, from the fun Instagram Post to the nice notes, cards, and yummy treats. All your kind messages and smiles reminded me why being the principal at Woodley Hills is such a special job. I'm so happy to serve this community and work with families who care so much about their kids doing well in school.

I also want to celebrate some amazing news! I'm so proud to share that every single class at Woodley Hills had an attendance rate of 90% or higher for the whole month of October! That's fantastic! It was truly great seeing all of our students almost every single day, because we know that being in class is the first step to success. Let's keep up this great habit! Be on the lookout for details about our next attendance challenge coming soon.

Thank you again for all your support. I look forward to a great week of learning and fun with our wonderful students!

Sincerely,

Dr. LaChelle R. Williams, Principal

We’re excited to announce that the beloved Scholastic Book Fair is just around the corner! This event is always a favorite among students and plays a big role in supporting our school’s reading programs. To make it a success, we need the help of our amazing parent volunteers. Whether you can spare an hour or a day, your time and energy make a huge difference. Please consider signing up to volunteer—we can’t do it without you!  If you can volunteer then please note that FCPS now requires ALL volunteers to register and apply on the new system Volunteer FCPS.  So you would need to register online with FCPS and then sign-up at the WHES sign-up genius to pick a date and time.  Thank you for taking the extra step to help out!

The Fair will be held December 1-5th.  All classes will have time to shop during the school day.  We will also be open for family shopping on Literacy Night, December 4th from 5:00-7:00pm.  Can’t wait to see you there!

Grades in Language Arts

You might notice that your student's progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) look a little different. This is happening because we've brought in a new curriculum and new ways to check on learning (assessments), and there are new state guidelines called the VDOE Standards of Learning.

FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the big skills they need by the very end of the school year. Think of it like going on a journey. It’s challenging at first, but on your journey, you learn your way — and maybe even a few shortcuts!

First quarter grades may seem lower than usual as students work hard to reach grade-level mastery.

Please know that this is a positive, expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they grow and achieve. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards!

Learn more about this change in ELA grading and reporting.

FCPS Buildings Benefit All Community Members

In addition to our students and teachers, we estimate millions of visits by students and community members to Fairfax County schools through more than 500,000 events. Most of the public meeting and recreational facilities available in the county are FCPS facilities.

FCPS works with the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and with the Fairfax County Park Authority to ensure that school facilities and athletic fields are available to the public after school hours.

The 2025 Bond Referendum will be on the ballot in November. Vote on Tuesday, November 4. Learn more about registering to vote and make a voting plan.

How Bond Projects are Selected

Each year, the School Board and FCPS staff members work with the community to develop an updated, five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for school building and renovation projects. To develop the CIP, the school system assesses changes in expected enrollments, academic programs, and facility conditions to determine priorities for new construction, renovations, and other capital facility projects. The School Board then evaluates the affordability of these school needs against other countywide requirements to determine the bond proposal.

Because of this, while FCPS and the School Board generally try to follow the CIP, changes can be made year-over-year depending on the evolving needs of the school division.

The School Board is committed to protecting the community’s investment in schools and other buildings, which have a combined present value approaching $9 billion. Not only do these facilities wear out over time, but they also become outdated, both technologically and instructionally. FCPS renovates its schools to ensure that students, countywide, have effective and efficient learning environments to thrive and grow.
