Important Information about SNAP and VENA
October SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are not affected by the federal government shutdown and have been distributed as expected. Unfortunately, though, because the federal government shutdown is still in effect, regular, federally funded November SNAP benefits cannot be issued.
To fill this gap the state of Virginia has created an emergency food assistance program called Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA). VENA will provide emergency food assistance to eligible SNAP households while the federal shutdown continues in November. Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) is for anyone who was approved for SNAP as of October 29, 2025.
The effect of the federal government shutdown on SNAP is quickly evolving. Fairfax County Department of Family Services will provide the most current updates on its SNAP Updates webpage.
The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) has also created a webpage with information about VENA and helpful FAQs.
