happy halloween

Hello Mustangs,

It has been another exciting week at South County Middle School. We had a great first week with our dry run for metal detectors. As a reminder, we will "go live" with Safety and Security monitoring our towers (metal detectors) on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. If you would like to see the metal detectors, you are more than welcome to visit the school on November 3 and 4 between 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Additionally, our 8th graders participated in a field trip to Finance Park this week and had an enjoyable experience. In fact, the staff at Finance Park told us that our group was the most well-behaved they had ever experienced. Please note that the 1st quarter ended today, and grades will be available soon. As always, thank you for all you do for our school community, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, feedback, or concerns. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday!

Justin Simmons | Principal | South County Middle School

Impact of Federal Shutdown on Local Community

Fairfax County is home to around 80,000 federal employees and thousands of federal contractors. Its Federal Workforce Resource Hub is intended to help navigate current and future issues for residents, government employees, active military/veterans, contractors, nonprofits and businesses who may be affected by actions, changes, or disruptions to federal services or employment.

Community Resources for Families in Need

If your family is affected by the shutdown or you know someone looking for help, the Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) provides centralized information for community-based organizations and other Fairfax County agencies. CSP can provide information, referrals, and advocacy to help individuals connect with services, including: basic needs (food, shelter, clothing), financial assistance, health care services, and referrals to services and resources.

Visit the CSP website or call 703-222-0880 for assistance.

SIS ParentVUE End-of-Quarter Closure

The Gradebook in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed for the end of the first quarter from Friday, October 31, 4 p.m. to Monday, November 10, 6 a.m. Activate your ParentVUE account to easily access grade reports.

GO PAPERLESS

The “Go Paperless” option is available to parents/guardians to allow them to receive only online progress reports:

  • Log into ParentVUE, then go to My Account and select Go Paperless.

  • To prevent mailing of the printed progress reports, all parents/guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option.

Please Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

SCMS Mustang Market Canned Food Drive

This is a wonderful opportunity for our entire community to come together and help those in need by supporting local families.

Hunger is a challenge right here in our area, and a single donation can make a difference in someone’s life.  We are asking for the following items to be donated:

  • Canned vegetables and fruits
  • Canned beans
  • Canned pasta sauce
  • Individual and unopened bag/box of rice
  • Small box of unopened spaghetti

Donation Period:  The food drive will run for one month, starting Tuesday, October 14th through Friday, November 14th.

Students are asked to bring their canned goods donations directly to their 3rd period teacher.  The class that collects the most items will receive donuts for the entire class.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require special services and support to access instruction that is typically presented auditorily (by means of hearing) and visually. FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school site or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

The Virginia Department of Education also provides information about Additional Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.
