Principal’s Message to Families

Dear Ravensworth Family,

November is National Family Engagement Month. This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development. If you have not had the privilege of meeting Ravensworth ES’s family liaison, please stop by the front office and introduce yourself to our fabulous Maria Benitez.

We are excited by the progress demonstrated by each of our students, and we are looking forward to continuing this momentum into November and the second quarter.

Warmly,

Shannon Mueck

Interim Principal

Ravensworth ES

Ravensworth Family Liaison: Ms. Maria Benitez

t

Ms. Benitez has been a member of the Ravensworth Family for over twelve years!  She has been with FCPS for approximately 19 years as a SACC teacher, family liaison and parent.  Ms. Benitez is passionate about working with students, parents, and families.  She works tirelessly to ensure all our families are informed and have access to the opportunities and resources our school division and communities offer.  Ms. Benitez invites parents and guardians to meet with her to learn about Ravensworth, FCPS, and how to become involved in Ravensworth ES and their child’s education. We are so fortunate to have Ms. Maria Benitez as our family liaison.

SIS ParentVUE End-of-Quarter Closure

The Gradebook in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed for the end of the first quarter from Friday, October 31, 4 p.m. to Monday, November 10, 6 a.m. Activate your ParentVUE account to easily access grade reports.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. We will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Bravery Breakfast – Nov. 10th

d

On Monday, November 10th, Ravensworth will host the Bravery Breakfast from 8:00–8:35 a.m. Veterans and Active Duty military and families please join us to connect for fellowship, enjoy a donut, and take part in a special ceremony presented by Ravensworth students. Following the ceremony, veterans are invited to participate in a Veterans’ Walk through the school halls. We also invite families of veterans to submit a photo of their veteran — or a photo of the veteran with their children — to be featured in a slideshow during the breakfast. Please send photos to ambowen1@fcps.edu by November 7th. Submissions may include any family member who has served as a veteran.

Library Volunteers Needed

k

The library needs Tuesday volunteers! Currently, our librarian, Mrs. Sloan, needs support from 8:45-9:35 am and 10:50-1:10 pm on Tuesdays.

Volunteers will be trained in shelving books and checking in and out library materials to students/staff. They might also support with pulling books for displays and processing new books.

If you’re interested, please email Mrs. Sloan at jasloan@fcps.edu.

LEAP - Library Equity Access Pass

Did you know that every FCPS student PK-12 has a Fairfax County Public Library card? The LEAP program, now in its 6th year, allows all FCPS students to check out up to 3 library books for up to 6 weeks at a time (print books only). In lieu of presenting a physical library card, students give their names to the public librarian (no student ID needed) to check out their books. A new LEAP button has been added on the Library Resources page on the FCPS website. Click on the LEAP button to learn more.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require special services and support to access instruction that is typically presented auditorily (by means of hearing) and visually. FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school site or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school.

Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired. The Virginia Department of Education also provides information about Additional Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses. Once approved, benefits remain valid for the rest of the school year and for up to 30 school days into the following school year, even if the family’s income changes again.
