Message from Principal Prindle

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,

As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year I wanted to take some time to highlight the celebrations we have had as a school.

  • 70th Anniversary

  • Renovation Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

  • Woodson Football Feeder Night

  • Homecoming Parade
  • Little Heroes Military Family Event
  • Book Fair/Ice Cream Social

  • Fun Run

  • Family Workshops: Advanced Academics Program and Social Emotional Learning

  • Chronic Absences down 2% from last year at this time. Currently at 4.9%.

We also have many challenges facing our local community. We are a school community that has been hit hard with the Federal Government shutdown. We know that our neighbors are leaning in to support each other, it is a beautiful part of this school. If your family is experiencing a need, please reach out to our Family Liaison, Hana Kim (hkim22@fcps.edu), who can help connect you to resources or directly to me at sbprindle@fcps.edu.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend and we look forward to having our students back to kickoff the second quarter.

Thank you.

Sharyn Prindle

Principal

✅ Please Submit Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or submitting the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type “Federal Impact Aid Survey” in the Issue Description section. You may also call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Green Team Clean Up is a Success

green

What a wonderful day we had to clean up the large courtyard beds.  We had 22 people ( two WFES alumni) come out and remove the weeds and dead plants in our garden beds.  We were delighted to also harvest some carrots that the kids took home with them.  We were then able to plant some cover crops in the beds which will add nitrogen to the soil over the winter.  Some students still wanted to work so we started cleaning the small courtyard too!  I was so impressed with the strength, stamina, and perseverance these volunteers had!!

Thanks for all your help!!  If you missed this opportunity and would still like to contribute, we have a pile of mulch by the basketball courts that needs to be moved in the next couple of weeks.  If you have time this week or next with the early release days and conference days, let me know!  Otherwise, be on the lookout for a sign-up genius!!

Impact of Federal Shutdown on Local Community

Fairfax County is home to around 80,000 federal employees and thousands of federal contractors. Its Federal Workforce Resource Hub is intended to help navigate current and future issues for residents, government employees, active military/veterans, contractors, nonprofits and businesses who may be affected by actions, changes, or disruptions to federal services or employment.

Community Resources for Families in Need

Through partnerships with community-based organizations and other Fairfax County agencies, Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) provides information, referrals, and advocacy to help individuals connect with services, including: basic needs (food, shelter, clothing), financial assistance, health care services, and referrals to services and resources.

Visit the CSP website or call 703-222-0880 for assistance.

How to Access or Donate Food to Those in Need

View the Emergency Food Access Providers webpage to see where to access food or donate to your local food bank.

Emergency Food Map Access

Emergency Food Access Map- This food access resource connects community members to the locations of food distributions throughout Fairfax County. The results can be filtered by several variables including zip code, items needed, and language spoken. Metro routes are also displayed to help plan your trip. ⚠️Student Impact: Important Information About Virginia SOL Changes and Accountability

It is important that families are aware of the startling impact that new SOL cut scores (what number indicates proficiency in a subject) will have on our students. When looking at FCPS pass rates, 26% of our students who passed their math SOL in the spring of 2025 would no longer be considered passing if they took the same test with these new cut scores. For reading, it’s 28% fewer students.

During the October 23 School Board meeting, Dr. Reid shared some of the impacts that the Virginia Board of Education’s proposed changes will have on our students.

For our students in younger grades, these changes signal that their achievement now falls short, which can harm their beliefs about themselves as learners and future school success.

These changes aren’t about raising expectations for our children, they simply move the finish line for students. Raising expectations means we change the learning experience for our students, something FCPS is deeply committed to as is evidenced by our focus on increasing access to high school mathematics courses in elementary and middle school and ensuring all students have access to rigorous high school courses that prepare them for the future.

The Virginia Board of Education will be taking action on the plan to implement the changes to cut scores on November 13. Community members are able to provide feedback on these changes through November 6

The state will also host a listening session for families on November 5 from 5:30-6:30pm where you can share your thoughts. You can join the the listening session with this information:

Link to join the meeting

Meeting ID: 230 998 444 924 3

Passcode: ui9mv9Nz

There are also several legislative changes that will take effect in the 2026-27 school year including additional requirements for SOL testing and requiring SOL testing results to count as a portion of the students final grade in middle and high school.

In addition to these cut score changes, the state is also changing how they measure schools. This means that many Virginia families will now see their schools marked as failing. Superintendent Reid explains more in this short video and greater detail can be found on the FCPS website.

We will continue to keep our community informed about these state changes that will have an impact on our students and our schools.
