2025-26 AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees
As part of the FCPS Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).
FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form that was distributed by your student's 5th period teacher on Tuesday, September 29th. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment.
AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by this Friday, October 31st. Parents/Guardians will be billed a $99 non-refundable test fee for AP exams in December 2025 for tests that exceed the six FCPS-funded tests. All Opt-Out forms are due to the box located in Student Services this Friday, October 31st. When a student turns in their form, they must sign their name on the list acknowledging their Opt-Out form has been turned in.
2026 AP Testing
Reference the College Board 2026 AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams. If you have any questions or need an AP Opt-Out form reprinted please contact our Assessment Coach Elly Donlen at ekdonlen@fcps.edu.

Virginia Summer Residential Governor's School
The 2026 Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s School (SRGS) Program is beginning its application process. Governor’s School is a challenging and enriching Virginia program designed for highly motivated students who are looking for a challenging summer experience. The selection process is extremely competitive. Most students selected rank in the top 10% of their class and have scored in the 90th percentile on standardized measures of ability or achievement tests. These residential programs run from late June to late July. Only current sophomores and juniors who are available during that time frame and whose records match these criteria should apply. You are only permitted to apply to one SRGS program.
John Allman will hold an interest meeting for the 2026 Academic programs at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, in the MHS Lecture Hall (students only, please).
Michael Shapiro will hold an interest meeting for the 2026 Visual & Performing Arts programs at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, in the MHS College and Career Center (students only, please).
Students interested in applying to the 2026 Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s Schools (SRGS) programs must complete the Academic or the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) interest form no later than November 5, 2025. No late interest form entries will be accepted.

Acknowledge, Care, and Tell - 9th Grade Program
This information was previously sent via email to all 9th grade parent(s)/guardian(s) on October 1, 2025.
Each school year, all middle and high schools in FCPS teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. All schools use an evidence-based program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). At McLean High School, we refer to our program as Acknowledge, Care, & Tell (ACT), which is presented by our school counselors and clinical staff. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. More detailed information on this program can be located in the previous message emailed.
Throughout November, McLean HS school counselors and clinical staff will provide this program to all 9th grade students through Health and PE 9 classes. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) who do not wish for their student to participate in this program may opt their student out by contacting their student’s school counselor. Requests to opt out of this program must be received by November 3, 2025.

McLean HS Tech Support for Students 🖥️
If you are experiencing issues with your FCPS issued laptop, please use the Tech Support Request Form to enter your information. The tech support team will then get back to you as soon as possible.
Cell Phones Off, Learning On
Cell phones can significantly impact academic performance — research has shown that it takes students 10 minutes or more to shift their focus back to learning after being interrupted by a single cell phone notification! You can help keep our schools phone-free (and your child focused on learning) by:
- Reminding your child about FCPS’ cell phone policy and telling them why you support it.
- Contacting your school’s front office (rather than your child directly) if there is a family emergency during the school day.
- Contacting your child about non-urgent matters before or after the school day.
- Waiting to respond to non-urgent texts from your child until the school day is over.
Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy. Also, view our Media Balance and Well-Being Toolkit for resources to help your child maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with technology at home.
