Dear Families,

As the first quarter concludes, we would like to share our collective vision regarding spelling assessments at Silverbrook.

Historically, spelling instruction has been primarily teacher-directed, with some educators providing weekly word lists while others did not. This approach resulted in inconsistencies across classrooms and grade levels. Benchmark does not adhere to the traditional method of requiring students to memorize word lists for weekly tests. Instead, our curriculum includes weekly dictation assessments aligned with research and the Science of Reading. These assessments are designed to inform instruction and support students’ mastery of the concepts being taught within Benchmark units.

The following article offers additional insights into how spelling is viewed through the lens of the Science of Reading.

Moving forward, our shared goal at Silverbrook is to provide students with spelling activities as homework that reinforce weekly skills, rather than solely relying on memorization of word lists. If you have questions, please reach out to our reading specialist Ms. Donna Flood at dmflood@fcps.edu  or any of the administrators.

Sincerely,

Dr. Pamela Simpkins, Principal
