Silverbrook Outstanding Employee Nominations
Let's have a record number of employee nominations this year! See flyer below for details. Use this link or QR code to access submission forms!
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Vision and Hearing Screenings will be held on October 27, 28, and 29 (Mon.-Wed.) for all 3rd Grade students. Students who are new to FCPS will be screened as well. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. If your child wears glasses, please be sure that their glasses are at school on screening day. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further evaluation is needed. Prompt follow-up with your health care provider is recommended, as vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. If you would like to assist as a volunteer with the screening process, please sign up here for 3rd Grade. No experience is needed. Same day training will be provided. Thank you.
Thank you to our dads, Mr. Jaffry, and Mr. Loidolt, who support our Watch DOGS program. We appreciate you!
Attendance Matters
Attendance has been increasingly the focus of attention among school divisions and educators. Regular attendance is a significant factor in a student’s success:
- Chronic absenteeism correlates with low academic achievement.
- Absenteeism is a powerful predictor of dropout rates.
- Absenteeism has been linked to poor outcomes later in life.
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason, including excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions. Based on a 180-day school year, that means approximately 18 days per year or 2 to 3 days per month.
Silverbrook has several students who are now in the chronic absteeism category, and we will be reaching out to these parents via phone to inquire how we can support them. As we come to the close of the first quarter, any parent who has a student at Silverbrook who have missed 6-10 days of school will receive a letter in the mail or a report card. This letter is a touchpoint, making you aware that we are aware your child has missed important days of instruction. Whether excused or unexcused, an absence from school means hours of instruction your child did not receive. Every student should come to school every day. Here is a link to resources for parents.
Storybook Character Parade
Get your costumes ready for the Storybook Character Parade on FRIDAY October 31st, starting at 9:15 a.m.. All students are welcome to participate; however, only ECCB/PAC/Kindergarten -3rd graders will continue the Silverbrook tradition of marching in the parade.
Parade and Costume Guidelines
Costume Guidelines
- Be mindful of the comfort level of your child throughout the school day.
- Do not send any object to school that has sharp edges or resembles a weapon (this becomes an SR&R issue).
- Do not send students to school with a costume mask. Students will not wear masks throughout the school day or during the parade. Please be mindful of this as students will not be allowed to participate in the parade with a mask. If students need to dress before the parade, they should be able to dress themselves.
- Parade Guidelines
- Students should bring the book that represents the character they are dressed as (if possible)
- Students will walk on their own throughout the parade.
- Students will return to instruction after the parade.
- Parents and guests can line the bus loop as early as 9:05.
- Please remain in your space during the parade, as students will walk on their own.
- Students will return to class and resume instruction after the parade.
Weather permitting, we will have the parade outside in the bus loop. Parents are asked to line the route in front of the school, and our 4-6 grade students will line up near the island. If there is inclement weather, parents will line the parade route around the perimeter inside the gym.
We are looking forward to our 4th Annual Veterans Day Program. This is our way of showing our appreciation to our active duty and veteran soldiers. Our program will also be streamed via Silverbrook’s Facebook page for your convenience.
As we prepare for this special day, we ask that our students wear the following colors based on their grade level:
- Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades wear a red top and jeans.
- 3rd and 4th grades wear a white top and jeans.
- 5th and 6th grades wear a blue top and jeans.

Parents and guardians, please ask your child about the SOAR Celebration! Our students are doing marvelously with earning their SOAR cards. We made a goal to collect at least 150 SOAR cards and our students collected 169 recognitions. Our
students are being very diligent in showing characteristics of using self-control, being open minded, accountable and respectful.
As a school students earned 15 minutes of extra recess!!! They are excited and so are we. Our partners the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity shows their excitement about what our students have done. View the Sigmas celebratory video here.
Annual Giving Campaign: Building Bright Futures Together
Help the Annual Giving Campaign get to 67% by the end of next week.
We’re getting closer to our big goal — and next week, we’re aiming for 67% of the way there! (See what we did there? 😄)
Our schoolwide goal is $25,000 by the end of October, and every single donation — big or small — helps us get there. The funds raised go right back to supporting teachers, students, and programs that make Silverbrook shine.
A few quick reminders:
- Your donation to the Silverbrook PTO is tax-deductible! We’re a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and you’ll get an email receipt for your records.
- Many employers offer matching gift programs — meaning your company might double your donation! Check with your HR department or employee giving portal to see if your workplace participates.

General Music Program
The Fairfax County General Music Program of Studies includes recorder instruction in grades three through six. Every student should have his or her own recorder. Students should bring/leave their recorders in music class as this is a part of their achievement and/or effort grade.
Students in fourth through sixth grade who have attended a Fairfax County school in previous years should have a recorder and should bring it to music class the week of November 3, 2025. Students in grades four through six who are new to Fairfax County Public Schools will be given a free recorder. There is no need to purchase one.
If your student has misplaced his or her recorder, you have two options for purchasing a new one. Quality plastic soprano recorders (Baroque fingering) are sold at area music stores. You may also purchase a recorder via MySchoolBucks (https://www.myschoolbucks.com ) for the price of $4.82. Your child’s music teacher will give them a recorder at school as soon as they receive the receipt. Again, we plan to start recorder instruction the week of November 3rd.
Please note, if you also have a third grader attending Silverbrook, you will receive information later in the year regarding recorder instruction. There is no need to purchase a recorder for your third-grade student.
We are looking forward to making music with your students and their recorders this year! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the school. (703-690-5100). Thank you for your continued support!
