Woodson Orchestra

Message from Mr. Greata

October is always such a wonderful month with beautiful weather and plenty of fun activities, and this October has been no different! Our Leadership students hosted an amazing Fall Fest this past Saturday, welcoming our younger pyramid students for treats, games, and fun. It was a fantastic event—well-planned and well-executed by our students.

We also enjoyed our Orchestra’s Masquerade Concert last Thursday, where we were treated to a performance that included the use of Music: Not Impossible vibrating vests. These vests expand our understanding of what it means to attend a concert and highlight how inclusivity at Woodson truly means everyone is part of the experience. To hear more, tune in to our Woodson Weekly Podcast, where we’ll share snippets from the concert and more information about the Music: Not Impossible initiative.

This week, we’re celebrating the achievements of our students. Our Get2Green Club will be recognized at the State of Schools event by Superintendent Dr. Reid. I also want to congratulate all 18 students who applied for the FCPS School Board Leadership Development Program. Although only five students will move on, every application was impressive, and I applaud those who stepped forward and said, “I’ll lead.”

As we approach the end of the first quarter, there are a few important tasks and reminders:

  • Impact Aid Forms: Please make sure to complete your Impact Aid Form, which can be accessed online through ParentVUE under Online Packets. This form helps secure essential funding for our schools, so we appreciate every family taking the time to fill it out.
  • Go Paperless: While you’re in ParentVUE, you can also choose to go paperless and receive all school information—including report cards—electronically. Check out this week’s newsletter for full details.

The quarter ends this Friday, October 31st, which will be a two-hour early release day. In addition, there will be no school for students on Monday, November 3rd, and Tuesday, November 4th.

If you missed the football game last Friday, you missed an incredible matchup that came down to the final seconds! Each week, our football players give it their all, and we’re so proud of the progress they’ve made. This week’s game will be Thursday at Robinson, and we’d love to see a strong Woodson turnout—let’s Safari Out and show our support!

Have a Spooktacular Week, Cavaliers! 🎃

Federal Impact Aid Form

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 12.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. This year, FCPS expects to receive approximately $4 million in Impact Aid funding. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Register for ParentVUE

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!

  • Your student will receive a pass to leave class at the time you specify.

  • You won't need to come inside the school; your student will simply come out to meet you.

Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!

For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

FAFSA Updates

Federal Student Aid has made the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available ahead of the scheduled release date. Any college-bound high school senior — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to work with their students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible. Check each college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and financial aid forms. Then, create an account, if you have not already done so, and fill out the FAFSA

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application has not yet opened but should be available in late January for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.

Over the next few months, College Access Fairfax will be offering several programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding and applying for scholarships. Get information on these programs and how to access them on the College Access Fairfax website

In addition, College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to complete the FAFSA/VASA. To request an appointment, families should email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org.

Bond Referendum

 How Bond Projects Are Selected

Each year, the School Board and FCPS staff members work with the community to develop an updated, five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for school building and renovation projects. To develop the CIP, the school system assesses changes in expected enrollments, academic programs, and facility conditions to determine priorities for new construction, renovations, and other capital facility projects. The School Board then evaluates the affordability of these school needs against other countywide requirements to determine the bond proposal.

Because of this, while FCPS and the School Board generally try to follow the CIP, changes can be made year-over-year depending on the evolving needs of the school division.

The School Board is committed to protecting the community’s investment in schools and other buildings, which have a combined present value approaching $9 billion. Not only do these facilities wear out over time, but they also become outdated, both technologically and instructionally. FCPS renovates its schools to ensure that students, countywide, have effective and efficient learning environments to thrive and grow.

Read more about the FCPS 2025 Bond Referendum. Learn more about registering to vote. Make a voting plan and vote on Tuesday, November 4.
