Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

We're wrapping up another fantastic week at Little Run, and the energy has been incredible! This week, we had such a fun Spirit Week celebrating digital citizenship. Thank you to all of our students (and staff) for their enthusiastic participation!

We also enjoyed two great community events. Our "Anxious Generation" book club met again this week with a great turnout; please see the information below for details on our next meeting. In honor of Digital Citizenship week, we also hosted a Parent Coffee to discuss raising healthy kids in a digital world. A huge thank you to our family liaison, Maria Ruiz, and our school-based technology specialist, Jackie Oehrlein, for their work on this important event!

Speaking of excitement, we can't wait to see everyone tomorrow at the Roadrunner Games on Saturday, October 25! Please join us on the field for what promises to be a day of fun and community.

Important Upcoming Schedule Notes

Please make a note of the schedule changes for next week:

Wednesday, October 29 will be a 3-hour early release day with a 12:15 PM dismissal. All dismissal plans have been communicated with families via the TalkingPoints App. If you need to make any changes, please reply to that message.

Friday, October 31 will be a 2-hour early release day with a 1:15 PM dismissal, marking the end of the first quarter. We also hope students will join us in celebrating Storybook Character Day on this day! See below for more information on how to join the fun!

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the Roadrunner Games! Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal
Alison Butler, Assistant Principal

Patrols

Congrats to Scarlett and Matthew for being named our Patrols of the Month!

A Note from FCPS on Language Arts Grading

You might notice that your student's progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) look a little different. This is happening because we've brought in a new curriculum and new ways to check on learning (assessments), and there are new state guidelines called the VDOE Standards of Learning.

FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the big skills they need by the very end of the school year. Think of it like going on a journey. It’s challenging at first, but on your journey, you learn your way — and maybe even a few shortcuts!

First quarter grades may seem lower than usual as students work hard to reach grade-level mastery.

Please know that this is a positive, expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they grow and achieve. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards! Learn more about this change in ELA grading and reporting.

Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:

  • Military families.
  • Federally connected families.
  • Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the ‘enrolling parent’) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Step 1: CLICK HERE to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter. It is recommended that you use Google Chrome.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVUE Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all the forms when you get to the final page and see a green check next to each of their names.

BookClub

"The Anxious Generation" Book Club - October 28

Our three-week book club covering The Anxious Generation book by Jonathan Haidt concludes on Tuesday October 28th from 6-7:00pm, and all are welcome to join.  Keena McAvoy, one of the co-founders of DMV Unplugged will be joining us again as we wrap up our work together.  We’ve discussed the ways that technological advances have changed all our lives in many incredible ways and have also created an uncertain and challenging time to be a parent. The current norms of children and technology run in opposition to what is necessary for healthy cognitive, social, and emotional development. We will be spending some time exploring screen free alternatives and other next steps we can take to support raising resilient, successful, happy children in a time of overwhelming technological intrusion.

Come join us on October 28th from 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Little Run library. Please RSVP to Karen Spradlin, School Social Worker at kdspradlin@fcps.edu

Storybook

Once Upon a Time... It's Storybook Character Day!

Mark your calendars! Storybook Character Day is coming on Friday, October 31st, and we invite all students and staff to join the fun by dressing up as their favorite book character!

This is the perfect chance to read together at home and brainstorm a simple, homemade costume. Pull out those hats, props, and old clothes—no need to buy anything new!

Keep the Magic Safe!

For the safety and comfort of everyone, please ensure outfits are not violent or scary. Masks, weapons, and dangerous-looking items are strictly prohibited.

Talk with your child about their character choice; sharing their story will be the best part of the day! We look forward to seeing our school filled with characters from countless stories!

AAP Full-Time Screening Information (Grades 2-6)
