Atoms Athletics Recap

Golf has their final tournament as Sophia Sewall plays in the girls zone qualifier Tuesday at Twin Lakes looking for a chance to play in the Girls State Open Championship.

Girls Volleyball served up two more wins this week on their way to securing at least the number two seed in the upcoming district tournament. The Atoms were given a tough match Tuesday vs Falls Church, especially in a pivotal third set that saw the Atoms trailing the Jaguars 20-13. The Atoms battled back and won the set and finished the match off in the fourth to get a 3-1 win. The Atoms turned around and traveled to Hayfield Thursday evening where they handed the Hawks a 3-1 defeat and secured at least the two seed with the win. The Atoms travel to Mt. Vernon and finish with a road game to TJ Thursday evening.

Boys Volleyball continues to play hard through every game and get are getting better but came out on the wrong end in both games this week. The Atoms were beat by Falls Church, who remains undefeated in district play, Tuesday evening and were swept by the Hawks Thursday. The Atoms look to get in the win column as they travel to Mt. Vernon and host TJ for senior night in their final two games of the regular season.

Field Hockey played their final regular season game of Monday evening at Mt. Vernon. The Atoms continued their dominance of the National District as they handled the Majors 6-1 to end their season 7-0 in the district and securing the number one seed in the National District Tournament. Speaking of the tournament, the Atoms welcome Lewis to campus Friday for the first round of the tournament. The Atoms made quick work of the Lancers as they cruised and move on to the semifinals Tuesday evening at Annandale.

Football traveled to Hayfield Friday evening for a date with the Hawks. The Atoms played hard and kept themselves in it despite the 24-0 score. The score doesn't show that one or two plays and the game could have been 17-14 game. The Atoms defense held the Hawks to 14-0 deficit at the half but the Atoms offense just couldn't punch it in the endzone. The second half saw two scoring chances end in heartbreak. A long run was wiped out by a fumble out of the endzone, to which the Hawks would score on the ensuing drive, and a second chance saw the Hawks stop the Atoms after a first and goal from the six. The Atoms score those two times and the result could be a different story. The Atoms play their final home game for senior night Friday vs Lewis.

Boys and Girls Cross Country ran their final meet of the season Wednesday at Burke Lake. The Atoms used the race to tune up for the district championship meet that will be ran Wednesday at Burke Lake. The girls run at 3:00pm and the boys start at 4:00pm. Come out and support in the Atoms as they look to secure a spot in the region championship meet.

Girls Flag Football played their first games in school history Tuesday evening as Annandale hosted the first girls flag football game of the season. The Atoms took on Falls Church in their first game and the fans were treated to a competitive affair as the Jaguars prevailed in the matchup. The Atoms played Lewis in the second game and ran away with it as they defeated the Lancers 39-12. They travel to Justice Tuesday evening.

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Attention Parents! Volunteers are needed to sell concessions at games throughout the year, starting with fall sports Football and Volleyball. We welcome any and all parents to volunteer but when parents of a particular sport work a game, a portion of concessions sales directly benefit that team. If you are not able to help directly at home games, there are many ways you can get involved with the Atoms Athletics Boosters by attending our monthly meetings or being a team liaison. Thank you for your support for Atom’s Athletics!

For questions about concession stand sign ups, contact Lissette Puna.
