Wolf Pack Weekly

Hello Wolf Pack!

Our students and staff have been working so hard as we come to the close of the first quarter.

Oak Hill Family Panel

Last Wednesday, we had a fabulous family panel in which our staff was able to hear from five Oak Hill parents about their experiences in education and their hopes and dreams for their students. It was wonderful to learn from our families.

Revitalize, Restore, Replant

This week, our upper grade students have been enjoying some extra time outside. We were fortunate to be one of only a few schools selected to participate in the Revitalize, Restore, Replant program with Fairfax County Stormwater Management. Over the course of two school days, our students planted over 1,000 native plants! To learn more about this program, watch this video: Revitalize, Restore, Replant.

We were so grateful that Supervisor Kathy Smith joined us today to see this great work in action! Thank you to Mrs. O'Malley (6th grade teacher) and the Fairfax County Stormwater Management team who led our students in this great work!

Oak Hill Receives Purple Star Status

Purple Star award

Oak Hill Elementary School has been recognized as a Purple Star School!

The Purple Star Designation is given to schools that demonstrate a significant commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and families. This recognition is a direct result of our school-wide efforts to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all children, especially those whose families serve our nation.

This award is valid for three school years, beginning with the current 2025-2026 year.

We are thankful for everyone who helps make Oak Hill a welcoming and supportive place for all students, especially those with military connections.

We are looking forward to another great week in the Wolf Pack!

In partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Shelia Sobeski, Assistant Principal

Boundary Meeting Information

FCPS has purchased a new property designated as a new Western High School. No decisions have been made yet as to the boundaries or programming for this new high school, but FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid has invited everyone to tour the new facility at an open house on Saturday, October 25, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The new western high school is located at 2949 Education Drive, Herndon, VA 20171

As part of the county-wide comprehensive boundary review, FCPS has released updated maps and will hold community meetings to discuss the latest scenario. There will be a meeting on October 30 from 7 to 9:30pm at Chantilly High School to discuss the Chantilly HS and Westfield HS pyramids (which Oak Hill ES is currently included in.) You can attend in person or virtually

At the meeting, the consultant will present the latest draft boundary map (Scenario 4) and potential changes specific to the Chantilly and Westfield pyramids. Participants will also be invited to ask questions.

If you are unable to attend the meeting for our pyramid, you are welcome to attend any meeting that is convenient. View the full list of October boundary meetings

Grades in Language Arts

Progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) have changed to reflect the 2024-25 curriculum, assessments, and Standards of Learning.

FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the skills they need by the end of the school year. Think of it as a growth chart and each quarter students are measured in progress toward end of year expectations. In light of this, first quarter grades are often lower than the other quarters as students work to reach grade-level mastery.

This is an expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they progress in learning. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards! Learn more about this change in ELA grading and reporting.

Bond Referendums Support Communities

The building and renovation of Fairfax County public schools is not funded through the division’s annual operating budget. Voter-approved bonds allow payment for these projects over time. A $460 million bond referendum is on the November ballot. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Learn more about registering to vote. Make a plan to vote by Tuesday, November 4.

Volunteer Registration

We encourage all our parents  interested in volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, especially if you are interested in going on field trips! Click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias or who help in any unpaid capacity in the school system. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check. This includes field trip volunteers.
