Dear Haycock Families,

Happy Diwali to all who celebrate.

We were happy to welcome many parents to Friday's Cougar Connections and Conversations Parent Coffee. We shared information on keeping your child safe online.  Here are the slides from that presentation.

Our 5th graders had another wonderful experience on their overnight field trip to Camp Highroads this past week.  We are fortunate to be able to provide this impactful trip for our 5th graders, and we are deeply grateful for the financial support from the Haycock PTA and for all the die hard parent chaperones who accompanied our students and made this field trip possible❤️.

The end of the first quarter is fast approaching.  October 31st is a two hour early release day for students to allow teachers time for grading, completing report cards, and holding parent conferences.  If you haven't signed up yet for a 1st quarter conference with your child's teacher, sign up as soon as possible.  These conferences are important and give you the opportunity to hear how your child is doing and learn how you can support and help at home.

Our next three hour early release for students is on Wednesday, October 29th.  Student will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m.  Teachers will engage in planning and professional development during this time.  You should be receiving an email from Haycock confirming what we understand your plans are for each of your children for that day.

We hope you will join us for the October PTA virtual meeting, this Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.  See information below.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

Language Arts Update

Progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) have changed to reflect the current curriculum, assessments, and Standards of Learning.  FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the skills they need by the end of the school year. Think of it as a growth chart and each quarter students are measured in progress toward end of year expectations. In light of this, first quarter grades are often lower than the other quarters as students work to reach grade-level mastery.

This is an expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they progress in learning. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards! Learn more about this change in ELA grading and reporting

National School Bus Safety Week

Join us in celebrating National School Bus Safety Week, October 20–24, 2025, a nationwide observance that recognizes the dedication of our school bus drivers, attendants, and transportation staff who safely transport students every day.  This year’s theme, “Level Up for School Bus Safety,”  encourages everyone to stay alert around school buses, follow traffic laws, and model safe behaviors at bus stops. Let’s take this week to thank our transportation professionals and remind students and families of the importance of bus safety.

🍕National School Lunch Week

This past week was National School Lunch Week, which promotes the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. View menus for Haycock to help you plan for the week ahead.

Did you know that families can apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits anytime during the school year?

If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses. Once approved, benefits remain valid for the rest of the school year and for up to 30 school days into the following school year, even if the family’s income changes again. Read Superintendent Reid's October 1 letter regarding other resources available to families impacted by the government shutdown.
