Message from Mr. Greata

What an amazing Homecoming Week! It was filled with fun, school spirit, a great football game, and of course, an incredible dance. I’m so proud of our Leadership students for organizing such a memorable week, and deeply appreciative of all the staff who pitched in to make it a success. A special thank you to Dan Schaefer, Stephanie Graham, and Katie Cole-Kelly for their outstanding leadership throughout the planning and events.

Since we have a holiday today, we’re celebrating with a special episode of The Woodson Weekly Podcast on Tuesday, featuring the sounds of Homecoming—from the bonfire to the dance floor. Be sure to check it out on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

This week brings more exciting events! We’ll be celebrating Senior Nights for our Boys Volleyball team on Tuesday and Girls Volleyball team on Thursday, and our orchestra will be holding  Fall Masquerade Concert on October 23 at 7:00 pm. Last year, our orchestra piloted the use of Music: Not Impossible technology—vibrating vests, wristbands, and ankle bands that allow deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to experience music through vibration. This Thursday, we’re proud to continue this innovative and inclusive practice to make our concert accessible to all. Thank you to Devyn Wilcox for your tireless leadership in bringing this vision to life.

Finally, don’t miss our Fall Fun Fest this Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm! Bring the whole family for a morning of treats, games, and community fun.

And for all the latest district sports action, visit woodsonsports.com

Have a great week.

Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waivers or reduced fees for other FCPS fee-based programs.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!

  • Your student will receive a pass to leave class at the time you specify.

  • You won't need to come inside the school; your student will simply come out to meet you.

Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!

For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

FAFSA Updates

Federal Student Aid has made the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available ahead of the scheduled release date. Any college-bound high school senior — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to work with their students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible. Check each college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and financial aid forms. Then, create an account, if you have not already done so, and fill out the FAFSA

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application has not yet opened but should be available in late January for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.

Over the next few months, College Access Fairfax will be offering several programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding and applying for scholarships. Get information on these programs and how to access them on the College Access Fairfax website

In addition, College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to complete the FAFSA/VASA. To request an appointment, families should email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org.

Bond Referendum

Bonds are How the Community can Invest in FCPS Schools

Did you know? When FCPS makes improvements to the buildings and facilities that we use every day for school and community events, the funds for those projects come from bonds – not the operating budget for the division. And bonds are approved by voters!

A $460 million School Bond Referendum will be on the Tuesday, November 4, general election ballot. The referendum reinforces supporting FCPS schools and the county’s commitment to providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students, staff, and members of the community.

This upcoming bond referendum is expected to fund the acquisition for a future high school in the western part of the county; renovations to Cub Run Elementary School, Union Mill Elementary School, and Centre Ridge Elementary School; inflation adjustments for prior bond projects; security vestibules; high-efficiency upgrades; and other major maintenance projects.

Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum to understand how it helps fund capital projects and reflects an investment in providing students with a world-class education. Do you have a voting plan for this November? Learn more about registering to vote online.
