Herndon's Success Spotlight

 Herndon's Girls Flag Football Team

.

The Herndon Girls Flag Football team, pictured with Robyn Lady Vice Chair of the School Board, Dranesville District Representative, is one of 51 Virginia programs receiving support from the Washington Commanders, who have committed significant funding and equipment to grow the sport across the DMV region. As part of this major initiative, Herndon's team is helping to establish Girls Flag Football as an Emerging VHSL sport, giving young women a new athletic opportunity. The Commanders' investment provides Herndon and many other schools with custom Nike uniforms and NFL Flag Kits, enhancing the student-athletes' experience as they become trailblazers in the sport. The team will play the first of two games against South Lakes and Centreville on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 6:00 and 7:15pm.

Dr. Ponce Visits Family Literacy Program

.

On Monday, October 6, 2025, FCPS Chief of Schools Dr. Geovanny Ponce visited a Family Literacy Program class at Herndon, observing multilingual families from the Herndon area engaged in their learning session. He spent time interacting with parents and children, who were participating in activities focused on strengthening English language skills and fostering a shared culture of reading at home. Dr. Ponce's visit highlighted the critical importance of the program in empowering multilingual families and reinforcing the district's dedication to supporting every student's educational journey.

📵 When Cell Phones Are Down, Learning and Engagement Are Up: Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free

Cell phones can significantly impact academic performance — research has shown that it takes students 10 minutes or more to shift their focus back to learning after being interrupted by a single cell phone notification! You can help keep our schools phone-free (and your child focused on learning) by:

  • Reminding your child about FCPS’ cell phone policy and telling them why you support it.
  • Contacting your school’s front office (rather than your child directly) if there is a family emergency during the school day.
  • Contacting your child about non-urgent matters before or after the school day.
  • Waiting to respond to non-urgent texts from your child until the school day is over.

Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy. Also, view our Media Balance and Well-Being Toolkit for resources to help your child maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with technology at home.

🏗️ FCPS Buildings Benefit All Community Members

In addition to our students and teachers, we estimate millions of visits by students and community members to Fairfax County schools through more than 500,000 events. Most of the public meeting and recreational facilities available in the county are FCPS facilities.

FCPS works with the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and with the Fairfax County Park Authority to ensure that school facilities and athletic fields are available to the public after school hours.

The 2025 Bond Referendum will be on the ballot in November. Vote on Tuesday, November 4. Learn more about registering to vote and make a voting plan.
