Message from Mantua Admin

Dear Mantua families,

We kicked off our amazing week with a celebration of our military-connected families during Blue Star Welcome Week!  We had a fantastic turnout for our military-themed Movement Monday, and we featured students from military-connected families on our news show throughout the week.

Looking to the week ahead:

  • Bring your best smiles to Fall Picture Day tomorrow, October 7!  Picture packet order forms were sent home in last week's Tuesday folder.
  • We are ramping up for our annual Run4Rocky Fundraising Event, sponsored by the Mantua PTA!  Flyers will be sent home in Tuesday folders, and you can find more information on our Spirit Week and R4R event on the Mantua website and the PTA website.

Ms. Shannon, Mrs. Vaughan, and Ms. Maurer

We celebrated the hard work and dedication of our custodial staff this week.  Our custodians truly make the impossible possible.  A huge thank you to our team for the tremendous work they do to keep our school safe and clean!

PUP Deadline for Early Release Wednesdays at Mantua

Due date: October 15, 2025.  In order to plan for our next early release on Wednesday, October 29th, every parent/family should select a Plan Change for each Mantua student. Do NOT change your default, just make a plan change.  You may reach out to the Mantua main office with any questions about using PUP or about this change.  We are excited to use PUP moving forward!

We are linking the print resource (English/Spanish) and the video link explaining how to update the Plan Change.

Finishing Up Our Learning About Life Science in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the natural world around us.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: How do living things change? How have you changed since last year? How do you think you’ll change in the next five years?
  • Activity: Go outside and try to spot three different plants or animals. Discuss how they get food, water, and shelter.
  • At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website

Family Life Education (FLE)

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through 12.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in two units: human growth and development and emotional and social health. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please refer to the detailed grade-level program descriptions available at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.

For your convenience, the lessons and materials are available for families to view at their own pace on the All Parents/Guardians: Mantua Elementary School Schoology Course. Detailed instructions on how to access these materials can be found linked here.

Additionally, the Woodson Pyramid will be hosting a Parent Preview Night for FLE on Thursday, October 23, from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. This event provides an opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance in accessing the materials virtually. Join us using this link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/97789633711

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you choose to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available on the FCPS website.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school - please contact Ms. Maurer at mkmaurer@fcps.edu or the Mantua main office.

Every Day Is a Stepping Stone to Success

Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Absences should be reported in PickUpPatrol.  You may also use the attendance email at mantuaaelem.attendance@fcps.edu

Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.
