Roadrunner Roundup
Dear Roadrunner Families,
We hope this message finds you well as we celebrate the first full week of October and enjoy that fantastic cooler weather that finally makes it feel like fall!
This week brought a wonderful community event: our Walk & Bike to School Day on October 8th. Despite some cloudy weather, we were so happy to see so many students and families show up and participate by walking or biking to school. Every student received a bracelet. A massive thank you goes out to our teacher leaders of the EcoAmbassadors, Ms. Anderson & Ms. Burley, all the dedicated parent volunteers who helped make the day possible, and, of course, our amazing EcoAmbassador students for their help with the event!
Since the school year has officially gotten underway, we want to remind all families to take a moment to review our Little Run Family Handbook (ENGLISH | SPANISH). Each family receieved a hard copy at the beginning of the year. This handbook contains important information about school policies, procedures, and expectations that are essential for a safe and successful year for all students.
As we look ahead, please remember we have several calendar adjustments over the next few weeks, so be sure to review the important dates above to stay in the loop!
October 29 will be a 3-Hour Early Release day with dismissal at 12:15 PM. We will be dismissing students based on the dismissal plans we used for our first 3-Hour Early Release. Please be on the lookout for your child’s specific dismissal plan, which will be sent out via TalkingPoints next week.
We look forward to a fantastic week ahead.
Sincerely, Christie Yarn, Principal Alison Butler, Assistant Principal

🚨 Safety First! Important Arrival & Dismissal Reminders 🚌
To ensure the safety and punctuality of all our students, we ask that you strictly follow these procedures. Your cooperation is essential for the security of our entire school community.
For a more detailed review of all school safety guidelines, please refer to page 4 of the Family Handbook - ENGLISH | SPANISH
Reminders:
-
Bus Loop is CLOSED (No Exceptions): The bus loop is reserved for school buses only during peak hours:
-
Do NOT Park on Olley Lane: For the safety of our students, please do not park on Olley Lane during arrival or dismissal times. This creates dangerous traffic blockages and forces children to walk unsafely. Please use the designated Kiss & Ride line for all drop-offs and pick-ups.
Morning Arrival Timeline:
Tardy Policy: If you arrive after 8:30 AM, you must park your car and walk your child into the Main Office to sign them in. Students arriving after 8:30 AM will be marked tardy.
Afternoon Dismissal:
AAP Full-Time Screening Information (Grades 2-6)
A meeting for families considering submitting a full-time AAP referral or who have questions will be held on November 5th at 5 PM in the Little Run Library.

"The Anxious Generation" Book Club - October 21
On Tuesday, the book club had a lively discussion about Jonathan Haidt’s book “The Anxious Generation.” We invite all parents who are interested in this topic to join us for our next session on October 21st, as we welcome co-founders of DMV Unplugged.
We recognize that technological advances have changed all our lives in many incredible ways and have also created an uncertain and challenging time to be a parent. The current norms of children and technology run in opposition to what is necessary for healthy cognitive, social, and emotional development. With backgrounds in healthcare, education, and digital wellness, Keena McAvoy and Liza Schalch are co-founders of the non-profit DMV Unplugged. Their organization's mission is to educate families and schools about how the use of technology products has the potential to interfere with the wellness of our children and how, together, we can change tech use norms to prioritize the most important parts of childhood.
Come join us on October 21st from 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Little Run library. Please RSVP to Karen Spradlin, School Social Worker at kdspradlin@fcps.edu.

FCPS has launched a new system to help ensure student safety.
- If you plan to volunteer more than twice this school year, or chaperone a field trip (even just once), you must register in Volunteer FCPS.
- The process involves multiple steps and cannot be completed last minute, so we encourage you to start early.
Volunteer Levels
-
Level 1: Infrequent volunteers (monthly or less frequent) who are always supervised do not need a criminal background check. However, they do need a sex offender registry check, which is performed by signing in at the school's visitor kiosk.
-
Level 2: Frequent, ongoing, or regular volunteers (daily, weekly, bi-weekly) who are also always supervised are subject to the same requirements as Level 1—no criminal background check, but a sex offender registry check via the kiosk is mandatory.
-
Level 3: Volunteers with direct, unsupervised interaction with students must complete a criminal background check, including fingerprinting and child abuse and neglect checks. This applies to roles like mentors, tutors, or field trip chaperones who are alone with students (not accompanied by an FCPS staff member) at any time during the activity.
How to Register as a Volunteer
- Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
