The Lees Corner House System Has Returned!

House System!House System

This week, students gathered together for their first House Meetings of the year! Lots of fun took place and many connections were made across grade levels!

What is the House System?

The House System is a structured approach to school life that fosters a sense of community, belonging, and healthy competition. Adapted from The Ron Clark Academy, our school has adopted this system to create a supportive and engaging environment for all students.

How does it work?

All students and staff members are divided into four distinct Houses: House of Frost, House of Glacier, House of Northern Lights, and House of Stars. Each House is comprised of students in all grade levels.

Benefits of the House System

  1. Community and Belonging: Students develop strong bonds with their Housemates, creating a sense of community and belonging within the school.
  2. Leadership Opportunities: Students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and take on responsibilities.
  3. Healthy Competition: Houses compete in acquiring “House Point Tickets” which fosters a healthy sense of competition and encouraging students to strive for excellence that tie in with Blizzard’s Arctic Code!
  4. Character Development: The House System promotes positive character traits such as teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility.

House Activities and Events

Throughout the year, students will participate in a variety of House activities and events, including:

  • House meetings
  • House spirit days and celebrations

How can parents/guardians get involved?

We encourage you to ask your child(ren) about their House! By being part of the House System, your child will have the opportunity to develop valuable life skills, make lifelong friendships, and become a well-rounded individual.

Each student also received a House bracelet. We will be wearing these bracelets for House events.

House Spirit Fridays - we invite all students and staff to wear their house colors (bracelets, shirts, socks, etc) on Fridays!

We believe that the House System will provide a positive and enriching experience for all students at Lees Corner Elementary!

Comprehensive Boundary Review Update

FCPS’ October community boundary review meetings will begin on Monday, October 13. Each of the 12 meetings will focus on two pyramids. Our pyramid will be covered at the meeting on Thursday, October 30, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Chantilly High School, (Westfield and Chantilly Pyramids) in person or virtual. Register by clicking “in person” or “virtual,” based on how you would like to participate.

At the meeting, the consultant will present the latest draft boundary map (Scenario 4) and potential changes specific to our pyramid and the Westfield pyramid. Participants will also be invited to ask questions.

If you are unable to attend the meeting for our pyramid, you are welcome to attend any meeting that is convenient. View the full list of October boundary meetings

Visit the Comprehensive Boundary Review webpage for more information.

Learning About Life Science in Language Arts

Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is about life science. Students in K-5 will be learning about plants, animals, and nature. Sixth grade students will learn about the natural balance of nature.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What are some ways we can take care of nature and living things?
  • Activity: Choose an animal and act out how it moves or survives in its habitat — see if family members can guess!

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
