Thank you to our 4th and 5th grade students for transforming our front grass area into a beautiful native plant and pollinator habitat.  These plants will help to filter water going into the Chesapeake Bay, reduce stormwater runoff and provide flowers for our pollinators. Be sure to stop by and check out their hard work!

PTA Howling Fun Run - Next Friday!

fun wolf

It’s hard to believe, but it’s only ONE WEEK week until Howling Wolf Fun Run!

The deadline for donations to the Howling Wolf Fun Run is October 16th, and we’ve got to raise about $14,000 more to hit our goal and fully fund our priorities for WFES support this year. Thank you for all the amazing support thus far–over $26,000 already raised! Donation envelopes were sent home in last week’s Thursday folders. You can donate online and track your students progress using their own Student Code here (Student Codes are found on the envelopes).

  • The students hit the goal of raising $15,000 in the first week, so the whole school will have a pajama day on TUESDAY, October 14th! Please no stuffies. Rumor has it Wolfie has some epic jammies…
  • Our target is for each student to raise at least $70 from family and friends. We know the timing of this annual fundraising is tough–if you have been impacted you can still make a huge difference by sharing your child’s website with others who may be able to support.
  • Please make sure your kids bring in their envelopes, even if all donations are online–it’s the only way we can pass out prizes. Prizes are awarded to students by the number of donations and by monetary goals, and your child can track their progress here
  • Friday, 10/17 is the Howling Wolf Fun Run Event, 9:30-10:30am: Come join us for an hour of pure fun as the whole school runs together to celebrate our community efforts. We’ll have breakfast burritos and coffee for sale for adults.

Howling Wolf Fun Run is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year and all funds go directly into the amazing programs and people that make our school community so outstanding. With budget cuts impacting the school, our PTA funds make a huge difference.

It takes an incredible number of volunteers to make this happen. Please consider donating your time: Sign Up to Volunteer

Howling Fun Run 2025 - Five Family Sponsorship Opportunities Remain!

Thank you to our sponsorship families who have already contributed $3,700 to sponsor the Howling Wolf Fun Run! We appreciate your financial commitments to WFES and the crucial support our PTA provides.

We still have five spots remaining for WFES Parents, Grandparents, and Loved Ones to put your school spirit on display for the 800+ students, faculty, staff at Fun Run 2025! We're asking WFES families to go above and beyond the mighty talents of our littlest fundraisers. Family sponsorships exist at the $250, $350 level and will be honored with signs bearing the family sponsor. This is a fabulous way to make a significant impact at WFES and celebrate your family’s pride in our school.

Thank you to these amazing local businesses who have demonstrated commitment to our community and school through their Howling Wolf sponsorship:

Lightspeed Reports for Families

Beginning October 12, 2025, all parents and caregivers with Records Access in SIS will automatically receive a weekly Lightspeed email report summarizing their student’s online activity. These reports will be sent to the parent/caregiver email addresses on file in SIS.

Please note we are rolling two distinct upgrades with this change:

  1. After October 12, all parents and caregivers with Records Access will automatically receive the report, no additional signup required. Note: prior to this update only the enrolling parent could request access to these reports.
  2. We are auto enrolling all parents/caregivers to receive a report. Note: prior to this update the enrolling parent had to sign up to request access to these reports.

The Lightspeed Student Online Activity Reports are designed to enable families to have meaningful conversations with their students about responsible technology use and digital citizenship. Families who prefer not to receive these weekly emails may easily opt-out by selecting the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the weekly email.

For more information and to help answer common questions, FCPS has added a new FAQ section to the Lightspeed Parent Report page on the FCPS website.

Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) Testing

FCPS has shifted to the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) abilities test this school year. The NNAT and CogAT will no longer be given within FCPS.

All students in second grade will be assessed in late October/early November. Students in grades 3-6 who do not already have an ability test on file will also participate in testing.

  • Abilities tests estimate student reasoning and problem solving abilities through a battery of test items.
  • FCPS offers the NGAT as a universal screener, meaning it is provided to all students.
  • Per Virginia code, districts must use results of one nationally normed ability test as a part of the identification process for Advanced Academic Programs (AAP).

🏗️ School Bond Referendum on Ballot Tuesday, November 4

The $460 million School Bond Referendum — supporting the division and county’s commitment to providing safe and welcoming learning environments for all students — will be on the Tuesday, November 4, general election ballot.

The funding provided by voter-approved bonds is expected to fund projects identified in the FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program, which was approved by the School Board in February.

The building and renovation of our schools is not funded through the division’s operating budget. Voter-approved bonds allow payment for these projects over time. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Watch this video that explains, “What Is a bond?”
