principal's message

Hello Mustangs,

It has been another great week at South County Middle School! Next week will kick off our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program with HORSE Cards. Students can receive HORSE cards from their teachers by demonstrating the following traits: Honesty, Ownership, Respect, Service, and/or Effort. If students receive a HORSE card, they will be able to obtain an item from our HORSE cart (e.g., a bag of chips, etc.). Additionally, the PTSO will host its Bingo event immediately after school (2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) on Thursday, October 9, 2025. Tickets ($5 in advance, $7 at the door) include a Marker, bingo cards, and, if purchased ahead of time, a drink. As always, thank you for all that you do for our school community, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, feedback, or concerns. We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Justin Simmons | Principal | South County Middle School

Attendance

Every Day Is a Stepping Stone to Success

Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school.  You can call the attendance line at 703-690-5555, email the attendance line, southcountymiddle.attendance@fcps.edu and leave a message with your child’s name, ID number, and reason why your child will be absent.  Here are our attendance procedures.
