Thoreau Matters Friday, October 3, 2025

Dear Thoreau Families,

As mentioned last week, Thoreau will implement the OpenGate Weapons Detection system on Thursday, October 9. Students have already watched a video explaining the process, and practice opportunities will be available next week. The following week, students will receive their Yondr cell phone storage pouch, and expectations for usage will be reviewed. If you'd like to learn more about these initiatives, please join us for our first parent coffee of the school year on Wednesday, October 8 at 9:30 AM in the cafeteria.

Our 7th-grade students enjoyed the beautiful weather this week during their annual MWEE science field trips. The Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience took place at Burke Lake Park, where students participated in hands-on activities to enhance environmental literacy.

October 2 was Custodian Appreciation Day. A big thank you to all the Thoreau custodians who work hard to ensure our school is a clean and safe environment for everyone!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

📘✏️Thoreau’s 2025-26 School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP)📊✨

Each school year, FCPS schools review key data to determine priorities and actions for the upcoming year. This process, aligned with the FCPS Strategic Plan, culminates in the creation of a School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP). For the upcoming school year, Thoreau’s SIIP focuses on four goals: English Language Arts, Success in Algebra, English Language Progress, and Discipline. While these are our main priorities, we also continue to focus on year one implementation of AVID, increasing our students’ sense of belonging (You Matter!), and upholding the expectations of RISE: respect, integrity, service, and engagement.

🌊 Thoreau Students at MWEE

MWEE

This week, our Thoreau students participated in MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience) where they investigated 🌱 watersheds and engaged in 💡 critical thinking about 🌍 environmental impact. Hands-on learning like this helps our students connect classroom knowledge to the real world and build lasting awareness about protecting our environment. 🌿✨

🕗Take the School Start Times Survey📋

FCPS is exploring options to adjust school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later. To minimize costs, elementary and high school start times would also need to shift.

Providing feedback is a critical part of this effort. Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys. A new School Start Times Survey is now open and includes two options designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.

Staff, parents, caregivers, students, and community members can provide input on the two options by taking the survey. The survey deadline has been extended to Monday, October 6. Find more information on adjusting school start times on the FCPS website.

🗺️🏘️Comprehensive Boundary Review Update📍💬

FCPS will begin holding October community boundary review meetings on Monday, October 13. The new draft map, Scenario 4, will be shared with the community for feedback at these meetings and uploaded to the Boundary Explorer Tool shortly before October 13. Community members can then provide feedback at their convenience.

As a reminder, the community provided feedback on draft scenarios 1-3 in the spring. Scenario 4 builds upon the first three scenarios and is informed by the Superintendent's Boundary Review Advisory Committee, which reviewed community feedback to help develop priorities for Scenario 4.
