PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Spartans-

We had another great week at West Springfield!

On Tuesday, we were happy to welcome our new military-connected families at the Blue Star Welcome Breakfast. It was a great opportunity to build connections and share the various resources we offer for some of our newest Spartans. A big thank you to our Military Ambassadors Club and all the staff who helped make this event successful.

This week was also Custodial Appreciation Week! I want to personally thank Ms. Maria Canas and her entire team for all they do on a daily basis to keep West Springfield in such great shape. Our building looks fantastic, and we know how hard they work to ensure we have a clean facility ready to welcome our students every day.

I hope you all have a great weekend. As always, please feel free to reach out directly if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Jim

📢News and Announcements

Updated Arrival Procedures

Change to Entrance Points

In reviewing our current processes, we are making a change to enhance efficiency for our students, families, and staff during morning arrival.

Starting Monday, October 6, 2025, we will discontinue the use of Door 12 for arrival.

This adjustment allows us to re-allocate equipment and personnel to provide more support at our two remaining points of entry. Going forward, the following doors will be open to accept students starting at 7:30 a.m.:

  • Door 5 (Gym Lobby)
  • Door 1 (Main Entrance)

Updated Late Arrival Procedure

While students are moving efficiently through the weapons screening system, we are still seeing a number of students arriving on campus after 8:10 a.m., which often results in them being late to class.

To streamline the process for students who arrive late:

  • Starting Monday, October 6, 2025, students who arrive late should report directly to class up until 8:15 a.m.
  • Students who arrive after 8:15 a.m. must first report to the Main Office to receive a pass to class from their subschool.

We will continue to monitor our processes and make adjustments as necessary to ensure a smooth and safe start to the school day. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Reminder: PSAT/SAT DAY-OCTOBER 8th

This Wednesday, October 8th is a the PSAT/ SAT Day for 10th, 11th, 12th graders. Here are some friendly reminders for what to expect that day:

  • Testing begins at 8:10 a.m.-if students arrive late, they may not be able to complete the test.
  • This school day will be devoted to testing – no classes will be held, and all academies are cancelled.
  • October 8th is a 2-hour early release day for students. Students who are finished testing will be dismissed around 12:20PM. Grab and go lunch will be available in the Cafeteria.
  • Normal bus transportation is available in the morning and at the early release times.
  • Students who are not participating in testing (freshmen, seniors who did not register, and students whose parents opted them out of the test) will stay home for an “unscheduled day.”
  • Students with disabilities taught on an adapted curriculum (students receiving low incidence special education services) will continue to receive in-person instruction with a 2-hour early release on October 8.

Resources Available during the Shutdown

Please know that we are here to support you and your family if you are impacted by this shutdown. Here is some important information that you may find useful at this time:

  • Families can apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits anytime during the school year. If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses. Once approved, benefits remain valid for the rest of the school year and for up to 30 school days into the following school year, even if the family’s income changes again.
  • Free, virtual mental health sessions are available through our partnership with Hazel Health. This is a great way for students to access care quickly and easily from the school clinic or home, providing support for stress, anxiety, worry, and other concerns that might be heightened during the shutdown.
  • The Fairfax County Government and various local organizations are stepping up to offer a range of assistance, including food, financial, and housing resources. I encourage any of our families who are experiencing financial distress, due to the shutdown or for any reason, to visit the Fairfax County Human Services Resource Guide (HSRG) website.
  • Fairfax Connector’s Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP) also provides 50% off fares for low-income residents ages 18 to 65. Learn more about the TRIP program and how to apply.
  • Fairfax County residents can take advantage of many of the free offerings the county provides to residents and students. Our incredible public libraries have a wide-selection of books and other activities that families can check out. All FCPS students also have a Library Equity Access Pass through Fairfax County Public Libraries, which allows them to check-out up to 3 items for 6 weeks. And Fairfax County’s many parks and recreation areas are open and free to residents as well.
