In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.

Yom Kippur

Wednesday, October 1, will be an evening-only observance day for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. There is school that day, but important events will not occur after school. Thursday, October 2, is a holiday and schools and offices will be closed. See the complete school year calendar.

PSAT/SAT Day

All high schools will administer the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Standard PSAT/NMSQT and SAT school day testing requires approximately three hours to administer. A two-hour early release is scheduled for all high school and secondary school students on PSAT/SAT Day to provide staff development or to allow teacher-directed time.

High school academy courses will not be held on October 8, 2025, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.

12th Grade - Students who signed up to take the SAT will be in school. Seniors who have not signed up for the SAT will also have an unscheduled school day. Seniors are encouraged to complete any missing work as well as work on their college applications if applicable.

If your student has decided to NOT take the SAT, please have them complete this Google Form. They will need to be logged into their fcpsschools.net account.

10th & 11th Grade - Students are expected to be at school to take the PSAT/NMSQT. If your student is not taking the PSAT/NMSQT, please make sure to notify the appropriate attendance line. Students are already pre-registered by FCPS.

9th Grade - Unscheduled day for most students and they will be at home. Ninth grade students are encouraged to complete any missing work or assignments that need to be completed prior to the end of the first quarter.

Please note that ninth grade students with disabilities taught on an adapted curriculum (students receiving low incidence special education services) will continue to receive in-person instruction with a 2-hour early release on October 8.

If you have questions about the PSAT/NMSQT administration or alternative activities, please contact Kim Longworth kalongworth@fcps.edu.

10th Grade Vision and Hearing Screening

Vision and hearing screening will be held on October 15th and 16th for all 10th grade students. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. If your child wears glasses, please be sure that contacts/glasses are at school on screening day. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further evaluation is needed. Prompt follow-up with your health care provider is recommended as vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning.

FCPS Volunteer Requirements

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact your child’s grade-level administrator regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

If you believe your child requires this accommodation during instructional time, please reach out to their grade-level administrator.
