FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later.
A new School Start Times Survey is open and includes two options that are designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.
Staff, parents and caregivers, students, and community members may provide input on the two options by taking the survey.
The survey deadline has been extended to Monday, October 6. Find more information on adjusting school start times on the FCPS website.
The Full Moon Festival is one of the most treasured times of the year for many Asian families. Known as Chuseok in Korea and Tết Trung Thu in Vietnam, it is celebrated when the moon glows at its brightest, symbolizing family unity, gratitude, and abundance.
According to the lunar calendar, this year’s celebration will take place on October 6, 2025, a cherished time of the year to gather together under the radiant glow of the full moon.
- For more information, please review the following resources.
FCPS will participate in International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, in an effort to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools.Students and employees are encouraged to bike or walk to school and work where safe to do so. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school, and to work with their school and PTA or PTO to assemble bike trains or walking groups for the event. Schools are encouraged to register online with Walk and Bike to School. Get more information about Walk to School Day.
*If you are biking or rolling, please obey all traffic rules and wear a helmet.
Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.
Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Visit the WFES web site to find all the ways you can report your attendance.
Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.

Wakefield Forest ES has an ongoing partnership with St. Matthew's Methodist Church. They host a variety of community events throughout the year.
The church runs a food assistance program that our families can access if they have a need. Learn more here: https://www.stmatthewsumc.org/mission
Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the natural world around us.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: How do living things change? How have you changed since last year? How do you think you’ll change in the next five years?
- Activity: Go outside and try to spot three different plants or animals. Discuss how they get food, water, and shelter.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

The Woodson Pyramid Administrations invites all parents and guardians to an important Substance Abuse Prevention Presentation aimed at supporting families in navigating the challenges of youth substance use and promoting healthy choices.
This presentation will be led by the school’s Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists (SAPS) and will provide valuable insights, resources, and strategies for prevention and early intervention.
This is a vital opportunity to learn, ask questions, and become equipped with tools to support the health and safety of our youth.
We encourage all parents and caregivers to attend. Together, we can make a difference.
The $460 million School Bond Referendum — supporting the division and county’s commitment to providing safe and welcoming learning environments for all students — will be on the Tuesday, November 4, general election ballot.
The funding provided by voter-approved bonds is expected to fund projects identified in the FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program, which was approved by the School Board in February.
The building and renovation of our schools is not funded through the division’s operating budget. Voter-approved bonds allow payment for these projects over time. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Watch this video that explains, “What Is a bond?”
Make sure you have a voting plan! Learn more about registering to vote. The recent renovations and updates at our school were funded by bond referendums. Learn more about the bond referendum at fcps.edu/Bond2025.
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.

[Howling Wolf Kickoff Video]
Have you heard of Wolfie’s challenge? It’s for our amazing students to raise $40,000 in two weeks! We’ve done it before, and can do it again! Here’s how: Our goal is for each student to raise at least $70 from family and friends. All money contributed funnels right back into the programs and people that make our school outstanding.
This year’s Fairfax County budget cuts impacting specials teachers, support staff and school programs mean Howling Wolf is more important than ever. Because of the increased need, we’ve introduced the option for family sponsorships, including sponsoring race corners, a snack station–all tax deductible and going directly into our school to support incredible programs and teachers. If you are interested in a family sponsorship, please email wfes.wolf.run@gmail.com.
If you are personally unable to give because you have been impacted by the shutdown or other government actions, we completely understand. You can still contribute by sharing the Howling Wolf Fun Run website (www.wfesfunrun.com) with other members of our community who may be able to support our school. We need all hands on deck!

Amazing Update: $5,000 has already been donated by these terrific local and family-owned businesses. We are so grateful!
