Message from Mrs. Burke

Hello Edison Families,

We’re heading into a busy stretch of October, so I want to share a few key updates for next week and beyond.

Custodian Appreciation Day

Yesterday was Custodian Appreciation Day, and I want to take a moment to recognize our incredible custodial team. They deserve far more than one day of thanks. Their hard work keeps our school clean and welcoming for students, staff, and families every single day. After every home game, they stay late to make sure our stadiums and gyms are spotless and ready for the next day. Over the summer, they do a deep clean of the entire building so we can start the year fresh. We truly have the best custodial staff, and we appreciate them today and every day.

PSAT/SAT Day – Wednesday, October 8

Wednesday will look different than a typical school day.

  • 9th-grade students will not come to school that day.
  • 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT from 8:10 a.m. to 12:55 p.m.
  • Seniors who registered for the SAT will come in for testing. All other seniors will stay home.

This adjusted schedule helps us provide a focused testing environment for students taking these important assessments.

Homecoming Spirit Days Start Next Friday

Friday, October 10, kicks off our Homecoming dress-up days. The theme is Tourist Day, so dig out your Hawaiian shirts, camera straps, and floppy hats to show your school spirit. We love seeing the creativity our students and staff bring to these days.

School Start Time Survey

FCPS is gathering community input on potential changes to school start times. Two proposed options would shift high school start times 30 minutes later, pushing dismissal to around 3:30 p.m. All families should take a few minutes to complete the survey and make their voice heard. Your feedback matters as the county considers these changes. School Start Times Survey

Midpoint of First Quarter

We’ve reached the midpoint of the first quarter, which is a good time to check in on academic progress. Please log in to ParentVUE to review your student’s current grades.

If you notice missing assignments, encourage your students to complete and submit what they can. If reassessments are available, make sure they schedule them with their teachers.

A strong first quarter is one of the best predictors of success for the rest of the year. Supporting students in building their executive functioning skills, like meeting deadlines and taking advantage of retake opportunities, is a team effort between school and home.

Thank you for your continued support. It truly takes all of us working together to help our students grow and thrive.

Have a great weekend!

Amanda Burke

Student Spotlight!

girl sitting on a patio, playing guitar, and playing violin

Sydney has been a magnet to other children since she was a small child herself. She has been coaching (a paying job) a children’s recreational gymnastics class at Metropolitan Elite Gymnastics & Athletics, located in Lorton, VA, since she was 14. She’s also on the Edison High School Gymnastics Team. She may pursue pediatric physical therapy during her time at college. She’s a natural leader when put to the test. Her other talents include violin, guitar, poetry writing, and painting.

We are proud to have her as an Edison Eagle!

Is your student doing amazing things that you want to shine a light on? We want to hear from you! Fill out our Student Spotlight Form and let us know. Your student could be featured in our newsletter!

PSAT/SAT EXAM October 8th

Important information for testing students:

  • Students taking the PSAT or the SAT must use their school assigned device - they cannot use a personal device.
  • Students need to charge their laptop and bring it to school on October 8.
  • We have extremely limited supplies of loaner laptops.
  • If your student does not remember their FCPS laptop, they might not be able to test on October 8.
  • Students will be dismissed at 12:55pm, buses will leave at 1:05pm.

Seniors

Seniors who previously registered will take the SAT.  Seniors who did not register to take the SAT will have an unscheduled day (do not report to school).

Juniors & Sophomores

Almost all 10th and 11th grade students will be taking the PSAT exam on Wednesday October 8.

Freshmen

9th graders also have an unscheduled day (do not report to school).

Paperless Report Cards

We’re excited to offer you a more convenient option for receiving your child’s report cards: Go Paperless!

By choosing to go paperless, you'll be able to:

  • Access report cards directly in ParentVUE with just a few clicks.
  • Reduce wait time in seeing your child’s report card.

Here's how you can opt-in:

  1. Log into ParentVUE, click on "My Account," and select “Go Paperless.”
  2. All parents/guardians living with the student at the same address must have an active SIS ParentVUE account to opt-in.
  3. Once selected, the “Go Paperless” option will apply to all associated students, no matter their grade level.
  4. If you’ve already opted for paperless for your secondary students, it will automatically apply to any younger siblings at the elementary level too!

IB Information

We are pleased to announce that our IB Diploma Coordinator, Ms. Devers, will be visiting all 9th and 10th-grade advisories between September 24 and December 19 to discuss the different IB Program options available to students in their junior and senior years.

During her visit, Ms. Devers will explain the structure, requirements, and benefits of both the full IB Diploma and the IB Career-related Programme (CP) to help students plan their high school journey.

Students were asked to complete a brief interest plan during the advisory session to indicate their preferred path and help Ms. Devers tailor follow-up discussions:

  • Students interested in pursuing the full IB Diploma Candidate path were encouraged to circle Theory of Knowledge (TOK) on their sheet.
  • Students interested in learning more about the Career-related Programme (CP) were asked to write "CP" at the bottom of their sheet.

Please encourage your student to talk to you about the information they received. If your child expressed interest, Ms. Devers will follow up with them regarding more detailed information sessions.

If you have any questions, you can contact Ms. Devers directly at sddevers@fcps.edu.

K-12 School Start Times Survey

⏰ Take the School Start Times Survey

FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later. In order to minimize any costs associated with this change, elementary and high school start times would need to shift as well.

Providing feedback opportunities for the community is a critical part of this effort. Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys. A new School Start Times Survey is open and includes two options that are designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.

Staff, parents and caregivers, students, and community members may provide input on the two options by taking the survey. The survey deadline has been extended to Monday, October 6. Find more information on adjusting school start times on the FCPS website.

Bond Referendum

Why Are Bonds Needed to Fund FCPS Construction Projects?

The building and renovation of schools are not financed through the FCPS’ operating funds, but through bonds. Similar to an individual or a family obtaining a mortgage on a residence to spread the cost of home buying over several years, bonds spread the cost of major capital improvements over a number of years. This ensures that current and future residents and users share in the payment.

This approach is good for our taxes, too. If capital construction were financed out of current tax revenues on a pay-as-you-go basis, projects would need to be paid for in a much shorter time frame, likely reducing other county services or necessitating tax increases. Fortunately, the county’s bonded debt is not likely to be a contributing factor to any increase in local taxes.

A bond referendum to benefit FCPS will be on the ballot this Election Day, Tuesday, November 4. It represents an investment by the community into the facilities everyone uses — whether for school or to gather as a community.

Read more about the FCPS 2025 Bond Referendum. Learn more about registering to vote. Make a voting plan and vote on Tuesday, November 4.

Boundary Review

📍 Comprehensive Boundary Review Update

FCPS will begin holding October community boundary review meetings on Monday, October 13. The new draft map, Scenario 4, will be shared with the community for feedback at those meetings. It will also be uploaded to the Boundary Explorer Tool shortly before October 13. Community members will then be able to provide feedback in the tool at their convenience.

As a reminder, the community provided feedback on draft scenarios 1-3 in the spring. Scenario 4 continues to build upon the first three scenarios. It is informed by the Superintendent's Boundary Review Advisory Committee, which reviewed community feedback received in the spring to help develop priorities that the consultant used to create Scenario 4.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review webpage for more information.

FAFSA

2026-27 FAFSA Form Now Open

Federal Student Aid has released the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Any college-bound high school senior — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to work with their students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible. Check each college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and financial aid forms. Then, create an account if you have not already done so, and fill out the FAFSA.

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application has not yet opened, but should be available in late January for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website

Get Help Filling Out the FAFSA

Over the next few months, College Access Fairfax will offer several programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding and applying for scholarships. Get information on these programs and how to access them on the College Access Fairfax website.

College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to help complete the FAFSA/VASA. To request an appointment, families should email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org.

Attendance

🙋 Every Day Is a Stepping Stone to Success

Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. See below for how to report your student's absences to the school.

Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.
