Disability History and Awareness Month
In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.
Moon Festival – October 6, 2025
The Full Moon Festival is one of the most treasured times of the year for many Asian families. Known as Chuseok in Korea and Tết Trung Thu in Vietnam, it is celebrated when the moon glows at its brightest, symbolizing family unity, gratitude, and abundance.
According to the lunar calendar, this year’s celebration will take place on October 6, 2025, a cherished time of the year to gather together under the radiant glow of the full moon.
For more information, please review the following resources.
📣 Mark your calendars!
Our next PTA meeting is on Thursday, October 9th at 6:00 PM- this month we'll be meeting virtually only. This is a great chance to stay connected, hear updates on upcoming fall events (including the Monsters' Ball), review PTA business, and share ideas- all from the comfort of your own home.

When notifying the school about your child’s absence, please provide a specific reason (e.g. illness, injured, any medical appointment, family emergency, etc). General messages like “will not be at school” or “absent today” may result in the absence being marked as unexcused. Accurate attendance records are essential to ensure we are following state attendance guidelines. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep accurate attendance records.
🙋 Every Day Is a Stepping Stone to Success
Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.
Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Full Day absences can be submitted through SIS ParentVUE. Early dismissal changes should be submitted before 2:30 p.m. through the Change in Dismissal Form. No student will be dismissed after 3 p.m. Please remember to bring your picture ID with you each time you come to the school.
Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.

October is Cybersecurity Month! Digital Citizenship Week is October 20-24.
Fall is here and capturing your kiddos jumping in the leaves or wearing a costume will surely become sentimental treasures! Check out this tip from Common Sense Media:
As soon as you share the first photo of your kid, you're establishing their digital footprint. As kids get older and start creating their own content or engaging with others online, it's important for them to understand the tracks they're leaving behind and what those tracks might reveal. Parents can help guide kids toward creating the kind of footprint they can be proud of.

⏰ K-12 School Start Times Survey
FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later. In order to minimize any cost for this project, elementary, secondary, and high school start times would need to shift as well.
Providing feedback opportunities for the community is a critical part of this effort. Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys. A new School Start Times Survey is open through Tuesday, September 30. It includes two options that are designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.
Staff, parents and caregivers, students, and community members may provide input on the two options by taking the survey. Find more information about adjusting school start times.
Hayfield Elementary School and Hayfield SCA invites you to participate in International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, in an effort to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools. Students and employees are encouraged to bike or walk to school and work where safe to do so. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children on their walk to school. We will be meeting at Hayfield Park at 8:00 a.m. to walk as a group!
Get more information about Walk to School Day.
There will be an Introduction to AAP Informational Meeting for parents on Tuesday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m.. This year we will hold this virtually; the link will be sent out a week prior to the meeting. Any parents of students in grades K-6 are invited to attend. This meeting will discuss the levels of service for Advanced Academics as well as the process for screening and identification for these services. Please reach out to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Avery Rothman agrothman@fcps.edu, with any questions.

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
At Hayfield Elementary School, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS. After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application. Please check back on your status to ensure the registration process goes quickly.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more. You may also email Marily Grotz, Family Liaison, at mgrotz@fcps.edu for assistance.
