Blue Star Banner

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate, and schools are a primary way they get integrated into their new location. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 27 - October 5, 2025, and throughout the year!

Walk & Roll to School

Hayfield Elementary School and Hayfield SCA invites you to participate in International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, in an effort to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools.  Students and employees are encouraged to bike or walk to school and work where safe to do so.  Parents are encouraged to accompany their children on their walk to school.  We will be meeting at Hayfield Park at 8:00 a.m. to walk as a group!

Introduction to AAP Informational Meeting

There will be an Introduction to AAP Informational Meeting for parents on Tuesday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m.. This year we will hold this virtually; the link will be sent out a week prior to the meeting. Any parents of students in grades K-6 are invited to attend. This meeting will discuss the levels of service for Advanced Academics as well as the process for screening and identification for these services. Please reach out to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Avery Rothman agrothman@fcps.edu, with any questions.

School Start Times Survey

⏰ K-12 School Start Times Survey

FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later.  In order to minimize any cost for this project, elementary, secondary, and high school start times would need to shift as well.

Providing feedback opportunities for the community is a critical part of this effort.  Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys.  A new School Start Times Survey is open through Tuesday, September 30.  It includes two options that are designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.

Staff, parents and caregivers, students, and community members may provide input on the two options by taking the survey.  Find more information about adjusting school start times

2025 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Tuesday, September 30.

Field Day Volunteers

Field Day is back this Fall at Hayfield Elementary on Friday, October 17th!! Volunteers are needed to help run the stations the classes will be rotating through.  Field Day will be run in two different sessions, but we would of course welcome all day volunteers as well. We will also have an early morning session for anyone who would like to help set up.  If you are able, please sign up for a session. We will follow up with you about a week before the event with additional information! Thank you!!

Session 1:  Set up | 7:00-8:15 a.m.

Session 2:  Grades 3-6 | 8:45 - 11:00 a.m.

Session 3:  Grades K-2 | 12:30-2:45 p.m.

Make sure to register as a volunteer through Volunteer FCPS. Field Day volunteers should select Level 1 or Level 2 and do not require fingerprinting or a background check.  If your application in Volunteer FCPS has been accepted and you are currently waiting to complete the process, you are already eligible for this volunteer opportunity.  Click the link to Volunteer FCPS, select Field Day Volunteer, and sign up for a session in Sign-Up Genius.

Please reach out to mbtillery@fcps.edu or crtorres1@fcps.edu with any questions regarding Field Day.  Contact Marily Grotz mgrotz@fcps.edu for questions about the Volunteer FCPS registration process.

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS

At Hayfield Elementary School, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS.  After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application. Please check back on your status to ensure the registration process goes quickly.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.  You may also email Marily Grotz, Family Liaison, at mgrotz@fcps.edu for assistance.
