Hi Braddock Families,

I’m sending out an extra newsletter because there are two time-sensitive updates I don’t want you to miss: a change to the School Start Times Survey and an extended deadline for the Student Leadership Program application.

School Start Times Survey Update

Back in March, the School Board asked the superintendent and staff to look at ways to give our middle schoolers healthier start times. We also asked that any options be cost-neutral given the current budget realities, and that feedback be collected from families at all grade levels so the whole community has a voice.

Since then, many of you reached out to share concerns about the limited survey choices. Thanks to that feedback, the survey has been updated to include a “none of the above” option. FCPS shared the K-12 School Start Times Survey this week and I am sharing it again.  I want to stress—this survey is simply to gather input, not to make a final decision.

Healthy start times matter and we also need to make sure we’re not creating new problems while fixing one. For example, later middle school start times shouldn’t mean elementary students getting home too late. This is a hardship for all students and even more so for, in particular kids in AAP or special education programs who are not at their base schools and may have longer bus rides. Personally, I think a 9:50 a.m. start for elementary is just too late.

The survey is open now and closes Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts and know I always welcome your feedback directly as well.

As always, thank you to everyone who has already reached out. Your input really does shape the work we do, and I’m grateful for your engagement.

Student Leadership Program Deadline Extended

Good news—the deadline to apply for the Student Leadership Program has been extended! This program gives students a chance to grow as leaders and work directly with the School Board. If you know a student who might be interested, please encourage them to apply.

Fairfax County Public Schools freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with an interest in law, government, policy, or making a difference in their community should apply to be a member of the Student Leadership Development Programs SY2025-2026 Cohort! Applications are open until next Friday, October 3.

The School Board’s Student Leadership Development Program provides 12 FCPS students with a unique opportunity to work with local decision makers and gain a better understanding of how our school system is governed. I cherish guiding a Braddock District student through the program, so make sure to apply today!

As always, if my office or I can be of service to you, please reach out.

All my best,
