Cubbie News
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
We are grateful for our staff and community as we have supported our Cubbies throughout this first month of school. Every day our teachers and staff work tirelessly to create engaging and supportive classrooms where our students can thrive. It is a joy to see our students so enthusiastic and involved in their learning. They are the heart of our school, and their energy and smiles are contagious.
We have seen the support of our community in so many ways already this school year. Thank you to everyone who is working through the Volunteer FCPS process to be able to support Cub Run! We appreciate all of our volunteers! It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Westfield Homecoming Parade and our PTA Family Game Night. A huge thank you to all the families and staff who participated in the Asha-Jyothi 5K and Fun Run. Your efforts helped us raise funds that will directly benefit our school and students. We look forward to sharing the final amount raised with you soon. These events are a great reminder of the spirit and connection that make our community so special.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment.
Warm regards,
Melissa Miller, Principal
Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal
Discovering Character in Language Arts
Benchmark Unit 2 in Language Arts is about characters who are faced with difficult choices. Sixth grade students will learn about characters who are changed and inspired by others.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Have you ever disagreed with a friend? How did you see things differently?
- Activity: Have your child write a diary entry from the perspective of a book character.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Advanced Academics Parent Information Night
We will be hosting a parent information session on Thursday, September 25 from 6:00-7:00 PM in our library. Naomi Egerton-Baker, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, will provide an overview about the continuum of Advanced Academic services and review the screening process for full-time Advanced Academic services for students in grades 2 through 6.
If your child is new to Fairfax County (enrolled after January 2025) in grades 3-6 and you want your child screened for full time advanced academic services, the fall deadline is October 15, 2025.
For additional resources, you can also visit the Cub Run website. Please reach out to Ms. Egerton-Baker with any questions. (nhegertonbak@fcps.edu)
Blue Star Welcome Week
Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 27 - October 5, 2025, and throughout the year!
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)
The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned to our front office by Tuesday, September 30.
Calendar Reminder
Yom Kippur (Evening-Only Observance and Holiday)
Wednesday, October 1, will be an evening-only observance day for Yom Kippur. There is school on this day, but important events will not occur after school.
Thursday, October 2, is a holiday. Schools and offices will be closed.
See the complete school year calendar.
Positivity Project
This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Curiosity. Curiosity means being interested in learning new things and asking questions to discover more about the world around us.
When we are curious, we want to know more and understand better. Curiosity helps us stay interested in stories, try new activities, and even explore new places. Everyone experiences curiosity in different ways, whether it's through asking questions, thinking deeply, or feeling excited about new ideas.
Being curious also takes courage. It means asking questions when we don’t know the answers and being willing to try new things, even if we might not succeed right away. But it’s through this curiosity and exploration that we learn and grow.
To practice and encourage curiosity at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
Principal’s Walking Club
Our Principals’ Walking Club will kick off in October on Friday, October 3 from 8:05-8:30AM. You are invited to come and join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other Cub Run staff to kick off the day with some movement! Please meet us on our upper blacktop. Our club charms will continue this year for Cubbies and staff attending. We hope to see you on October 3!
Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
Click Here to Sign Up to Volunteer at Cub Run!
FCPS has launched a new system to help ensure student safety.
- If you plan to volunteer more than twice this school year or chaperone a field trip (even just once), you must register in Volunteer FCPS.
- The process involves multiple steps and cannot be completed last minute, so we encourage you to start early.
Volunteer Levels
-
Level 1: Infrequent volunteers (monthly or less frequent) who are always supervised do not need a criminal background check. However, they do need a sex offender registry check, which is performed by signing in at the school's visitor kiosk.
-
Level 2: Frequent, ongoing, or regular volunteers (daily, weekly, bi-weekly) who are also always supervised are subject to the same requirements as Level 1—no criminal background check, but a sex offender registry check via the kiosk is mandatory.
-
Level 3: Volunteers with direct, unsupervised interaction with students must complete a criminal background check, including fingerprinting and child abuse and neglect checks. This applies to roles like mentors, tutors, or field trip chaperones who are alone with students (not accompanied by an FCPS staff member) at any time during the activity.
How to Register as a Volunteer
- Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
- Register in the FCPS Volunteer Portal
- Search for Cub Run Elementary

We have hit 50% of our goal of $30,000! We have 204 students registered! This year’s goal is to install two new water stations on the first and second floors for students and staff to enjoy!
There are weekly incentives and raffle prizes leading up to the Cub Run-a-Thon. Everyone who registers has an opportunity to earn prizes! This week, 5 lucky raffle winners earned a bear squishy ball! Next week, we will have 5 more raffle winners who will receive more gummy-bear themed prizes! Mrs. Nokovich’s kindergarten class, Mrs. Cousino’s first grade class, and Mrs. Jensen’s first grade class have met their goals and earned popsicle parties! Ms. Cousino’s class was the first to reach their classroom goal and they will get to vote on whether Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Haider become human sundaes or get silly stringed! There’s still time to register and/or get donations to be entered into our weekly raffle drawing of amazing prizes!

Upcoming Abilities Test for All Second Graders, Other Select Students
Beginning in October 2025, all second grade students and select students in grades three through seven will take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) as a universal abilities screener.
This assessment measures a student's general intellectual ability in three key areas: verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative. Abilities tests are differentiated from achievement tests as students should not be preparing for the assessment.
An abilities test is one of several tools that schools use to better understand a student’s reasoning strengths and learning profile. Teachers review results with other information to help plan instruction and support. Results can also help determine if a student needs advanced academic services.
Individual schools will send notification letters to families whose students are scheduled to participate in this assessment. Families can reference the testing requirements for each grade level in FCPS on the Grade Level Tests page.
K-12 School Start Times Survey
FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of beginning the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later. In order to minimize any cost for this project, elementary and high school start times would need to shift as well.
Providing feedback opportunities for the community is a critical part of this effort. Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys. A new School Start Times Survey is open through Tuesday, September 30. It includes two options that are designed to support student well-being, align with research, balance transportation logistics, and minimize costs.
Staff, parents/caregivers, students, and community members may provide input on the two options by taking the survey. Visit the FCPS website for more information on adjusting school start times.
Participate in an Upcoming Community Boundary Review Meeting
As a reminder, FCPS will hold two sets of community boundary review meetings this fall — one in September and another in October. Each set of meetings will focus on two pyramids per meeting.
All September meetings will include an overview of where FCPS is in the comprehensive boundary review process, an update and opportunity for feedback on school start times, how community input is informing the process, and next steps in the boundary review process.
Please register by clicking “in person” or “virtual,” depending on how you would like to participate.
Child care for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed.
Visit the FCPS website for a full list of meeting dates and information about the October meetings.
