Weapons Detection @ GMS

Open Gate Weapons Detection at GMS

We want to share an update regarding the weapons detection system that will be rolled-out to all middle schools this fall.  This weapons detection system is the latest effort to strengthen our layered safety and security programs. It is similar to those used at sporting events and concerts for many years. Right now, the system is being rolled-out at all high schools, but middle schools will be implementing the system very soon.

Before Glasgow MS begins using the system in an official capacity, we plan to give students and staff a chance to test it out and see it in person. We have been practicing utilizing the Open Gate Weapons Detection Units with a few buses each morning and will expand the exposure to include the kiss/ride line very soon.  This has allowed us to make small changes along the way so we can be most efficient when we start with all students.   We will create Panther Time/Advisory lessons for our students to learn about the units and have an opportunity to practice before we go live. Details on when we will officially start using the system will be shared soon.

Several Glasgow students joined Dr. Reid for a video discussion about school safety and to test out the new system.  You can also learn more by reading the Frequently Asked Questions on our website or watching this explainer video. And if you have additional questions after reading the FAQs, you can submit them online to our Chief of Safety and Security Office.

FCPS is taking every precaution necessary to provide every student, including the students here at Glasgow MS a safe and secure learning environment. We want to acknowledge and thank our families, students, and staff for being flexible and embracing this new layer to our school’s overall safety.

Indoor Recess Donations Needed

As the weather turns or for students who choose to stay inside during recess, we’re looking to build up our collection of fun and engaging indoor activities! If you have gently used board games, card games, puzzles, or other kid-friendly activities in good condition, we’d love to give them a new home.

Support Your Child’s Success by Checking SIS ParentVUE

Parents and caregivers can view important information in SIS ParentVUE such as student attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores. Watch this video if you would like help creating a ParentVUE account.

You will keep the same ParentVUE account until your student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same account. An app is also available for Apple and Android devices.

If you already have an account, be sure to update your phone numbers and/or email addresses (in the Parent/Guardian section), so your child’s school can send you important information. Learn more about SIS ParentVUE

Attendance

Student Attendance: In order for our students to get the most out of their education, they must be in school and on time to class every day. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Students who miss 2-4 days in September are more likely to go on to miss nearly a month of school. If your student must be absent from school, please inform the school. The attendance phone number is 703-813-8787 or visit us at   https://glasgowms.fcps.edu/about/attendance-reporting in our website.

In addition, parents will have the option to submit full-day absences through ParentVUE. Parent instructions are available on the Attendance page. The Parent Support Request page now includes under Application “SIS Parent” | Inquiry “Report Absences” option.

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones and personal devices (AirPods, earbuds, headsets, or anything connected to the internet) must be off and away from the first bell to the last bell. Devices cannot be used during passing periods or as an instructional tool in class. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703-813-8700. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone policy, which helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school.

News from After School Program

We wanted to provide an update about middle school interscholastic sports. We realize many of our students were excited about the possibility of new sports (basketball, for example) starting this school year. The FCPS Office of Student Activities and Athletics has been working with our middle school afterschool specialists on plans to expand middle school sports beyond cross country and track. We/They included basketball on the fall sports registration link with the hopes that the details would be worked out in time to have an interscholastic schedule this fall. Unfortunately, there are some elements of expansion that have not been resolved and we will not have an interscholastic basketball program this fall. We know that is disappointing and we will instead provide a robust intramural basketball program this fall and winter, while we work out the details to bring interscholastic basketball (and other sports!) to all FCPS middle schools.

You may be aware that our school has participated in school versus school competition in sports like basketball, soccer, futsal, etc in the past. There are some compliance requirements for interscholastic competitions that we need to work through before those can continue, or be considered, so, for now, we will concentrate on our intramural programs and ensure they provide the quality programming our students need.

Our middle school cross country program begins practice next week September 29th, 2025, and we are excited to have your student join that program! Competition for cross country begins October 18th and students must participate in at least four practices before competing so connect with us soon if you haven’t started yet!

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Williams gwilliams2@fcps.edu

SEL Screener - Parent Notification & Updates

  • The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.

Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Supporting Your Child's Mental Health!

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
