Woodson Weekly is published every Monday to provide the community with important information about school life at Woodson High School.
Vision Statement
Carter G. Woodson High School is a community that embraces diversity in a culture of improvement and success that promotes academic curiosity and individual mental and physical growth.
Message from Mr. Greata
Last Friday we had a blast at Hey Day, our traditional club showcase and fundraiser where students learn about all of the many ways to get involved and clubs raise funds by selling food and treats. It was a fabulous event, and we were fortunate that the weather held out to make it a beautiful day. Be sure to check out our Woodson Weekly Podcast to hear some sound bytes from this event. You can find the podcast on Apple Podcast or Spotify.
Earlier in the week, we had a heavy rainstorm during arrival. Our team monitored the situation closely to ensure that weapons detection did not leave students waiting in the rain. I’m happy to report that the adjustments we’ve put in place for rain days worked well. Students were able to get under cover quickly, arrival time was not delayed, and we learned valuable lessons that will make the process even smoother the next time we face inclement weather.
Looking ahead, we have several exciting sporting events this week, including our Field Hockey Senior Night – Tuesday, September 30 at 7:00 PM, and another home football game this Friday, October 3rd, at 7:00 PM, against West Springfield High School.
Before kickoff, students from across the Woodson Pyramid will join our chorus to sing the National Anthem. Last Friday’s game against Alexandria City High School was a nail-biter, with our Cavaliers fighting hard to the end. I hope to see you this Friday to cheer on our chorus and football team.
Reminders:
- No School on Thursday, October 2. This is a student holiday. To those observing Yom Kippur, we wish you a meaningful day and an easy fast.
- PSAT/SAT Day – Wednesday, October 8.
- Freshmen will not have school that day.
- Sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT.
- Seniors who registered for the SAT will test that day as well.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

Early Checkouts: To check a student out early, send a note with them to the Attendance Office. They will receive a pass to leave class at the specified time. You can also sign the student out in person at the Attendance Office, but be aware that it can take up to 30 minutes. The school cannot accommodate early checkouts after 2:30 p.m.
-
Full-Day Absences: Parents and legal guardians can report a full-day absence through the ParentVUE app or by calling the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800. When calling, be specific about the reason for the absence. For an illness, include symptoms like fever, nausea, or cough, and if a diagnosis has been made by a healthcare provider. It's also helpful to provide the student's ID number.
-
If you have received the morning attendance call, please first check your Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account to confirm your child is still marked not present. Sometimes attendance is updated after this call has gone out.
Important Reminders:
-
Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts. Phone messages for early checkouts are only accepted for emergencies.
-
If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

World Language Credit by Exam
The World Languages Credit by Exam (WLCBE) is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, students can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 world language credits. These credits are recorded on a transcript as Pass (P). No letter grade is assigned to any credits earned through the WLCBE.
The 2025 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Woodson High School on Friday, November 21 during Returns at 9:45 AM in Cavalier Hall. It will last for both Return periods and conclude around 11:15AM.
Registration for the WLCBE is now open and closes on Friday, October 17, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.
To register your student for the exam, please turn in the Notification of Registration Opportunity WLCBE Form (available in eight different languages). You may print, complete, and sign the form and then have your student turn the form into their counselor in Student Services. Or, you may complete the form, scan it, and then email it to your student’s assigned counselor.
For additional information about the WLCBE, and to view a list of the languages offered on the exam, please visit the FCPS WLCBE website. This google form also contains detailed information about the WLCBE including links to a practice test in the AVANT testing platform.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school counselor.
SEL Screening
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Woodson High School students in grades 9-12 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring. The Fall SEL Screener date is Thursday, October 23, during 3rd Return.
Parents/guardians may request that their student not participate in the SEL Screener on an annual basis. This can be done via the Parent Digital Consent System OR by completing the Fairfax County Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Request Form, which is attached to this message below. If completing the form, please return it to your child’s school counselor (either by scanning and emailing it, or having your child bring it to the Student Services office). The deadline to submit the opt-out form is Wednesday, October 22.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE. For more information about the SEL Screener, including information on opting out, please see the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

High school academy courses and shuttles will be canceled on this day. FCPS will provide regular bus transportation in the morning and after the early release.
Prior to the test, students will complete a digital readiness check that includes an optional pre-survey. If you wish to opt your child out of the pre-survey, you must email Kathleen Crosson by Friday, September 19, 2025. You'll need to include your student's full legal name and FCPS Student ID number.
Additional information about the content of the pre-survey and opting your child out can be found on the SAT and PSAT Pre-Survey Opt-Out Policy webpage at https://www.fcps.edu/node/36639.
