The Dunne Dispatch (School Boundaries, Part 9) - 09/19/2025
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I am writing to provide an important update on school boundaries and school start times.
I encourage you to share this update with your neighbors, who may wish to subscribe to my newsletter for future updates (click here to subscribe).
School Boundaries
I believe the revised scenarios (maps) will be published on or about October 10.
FCPS has published the schedule for the community meetings in October. If you care about school boundaries, I strongly recommend that you attend one or more meetings to ensure your voice is heard. These meetings will influence the future of school boundaries in Fairfax County. Your input will shape the options presented to the Superintendent, who will make a final recommendation to the School Board in December.
View the full list of meetings here. Below are the meetings that place in schools where Mount Vernon District students attend:
-
Wednesday, October 22, 6:30-8 PM, at Hayfield SS
- South County and Hayfield Pyramids
-
Friday, October 24, 6:30–8 PM, at Mount Vernon HS
- West Potomac and Mount Vernon Pyramids
-
Wednesday, October 29, 6:30-8 PM, at Lewis HS
- Edison and Lewis Pyramids
In previous rounds, FCPS presented the same content at every meeting. This round is organized by pyramids, so it is unclear whether FCPS will present the same content at every meeting. I hope that FCPS presents pyramid-specific content at each meeting. Either way, you are welcome to attend more than one meeting if you wish. Many parents have done so in previous rounds.
I am providing below links to the recent recommendations made by the Boundary Review Advisory Committee (BRAC) for each region attended by Mount Vernon District students. I encourage you to review what the BRAC is recommending for your schools.
The current plan is for the BRAC to provide input on the revised scenarios before they are published. (This did not happen in May.)
School Start Times
FCPS has published two options for new school start times, but these options have not been approved by the School Board. In general, I believe school should start by 9:00 AM at the latest. Overwhelming majorities of students, parents, and staff support start times before 9:00 AM.

Please take the survey here or at this QR code to tell FCPS what you think about these options.
I will be publishing another newsletter on school start times in the near future to provide additional background.
Very Respectfully,
|
Mateo Dunne, Mount Vernon District Representative
