Woodson Key Club

 Message from Mr. Greata

We got off to a wonderful start this week! A special thank-you goes to our leadership students for preparing an incredible breakfast that went far beyond a simple continental spread—eggs, bacon, sausage, pastries, muffins, juice, and coffee. It was the perfect way to kick off the week. Thank you to Dan Schaeffer, Katie Cole-Kelly, and Stephanie Graham, for working with these dedicated young people who arrived early to cook something special for us all.

As a reminder, there will be no school for students tomorrow, Tuesday, September 23rd, in observance of the holiday. We wish a meaningful celebration and happy new year to those observing Rosh Hashanah.

This Friday, we are excited to host our annual Hey Day, an opportunity for students to explore all of the clubs here at Carter G. Woodson High School and for those clubs to raise funds to support their goals. There is nothing quite like Hey Day, which is a long standing tradition here at Woodson.

The PTSO Teacher Grant Program launched this week! These grants allow teachers and sponsors to apply for classroom and club resources that the school cannot provide directly. Thanks to the growth in PTSO membership, we are looking forward to a strong grant program this year. If you have not yet joined the PTSO, please visit this [link] to learn more and become a member.

Are you interested in an update on the FCPS boundary review process? There will be a Boundary Review Meeting held right here at Woodson this Friday, September 26, from 6:30–8:00 p.m. (In Person or Virtual). The meeting will provide an overview of the current stage of the comprehensive boundary review process, updates on the consultant’s review of transportation and instructional programming, and ways that community feedback is shaping the process. Next steps will also be shared.

Is your student interested in flag football this fall?  It is not too late to sign up. Please have your student reach out to Kevin Fox (kgfox@fcps.edu) or Dan Mesa (djmesa@fcps.edu) for more information. Athletes will still need to get a physical and register on woodsonsports.com. Check out the extra credit portion of our podcast to hear from some of our flag football athletes!

Best wishes to our marching band as they represent us at the Herndon Showcase of Bands, performing this Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Herndon High School. We hope to see many of you there!

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another great week at Carter G. Woodson High School.

Weekly Wrap Up

Important Information:

Attendance Reporting/Early Checkouts

  • Full-Day Absences: Parents and legal guardians can report a full-day absence through the ParentVUE app or by calling the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800. When calling, be specific about the reason for the absence. For an illness, include symptoms like fever, nausea, or cough, and if a diagnosis has been made by a healthcare provider. It's also helpful to provide the student's ID number.

  • Early Checkouts: To check a student out early, send a note with them to the Attendance Office. They will receive a pass to leave class at the specified time. You can also sign the student out in person at the Attendance Office, but be aware that it can take up to 30 minutes. The school cannot accommodate early checkouts after 2:30 p.m.

  • If you have received the morning attendance call, please first check your Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account  to confirm your child is still marked not present. Sometimes attendance is updated after this call has gone out.

Important Reminders

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts. Phone messages for early checkouts are only accepted for emergencies.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Free and Reduced Meals

FRM eligibility carryover from SY 24-25 is valid for the first thirty (30) days of school, or until a new application is processed. Households will be required to submit a new application by October 1, 2025.

If you want your children to participate in FCPS fee-based programs on a free or reduced fee basis and receive information about other benefits for your children parents must also fill out the FCPS Consent to Share Students’ Meals Eligibility Status Information for Benefits for Other Programs.

Families can apply online for the 2025–2026 school year on the FNS webpage for a quicker response, though paper applications are also available from schools or can be printed from the website.

World Language Credit by Exam

The World Languages Credit by Exam (WLCBE) is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, students can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 world language credits. These credits are recorded on a transcript as Pass (P). No letter grade is assigned to any credits earned through the WLCBE.

The 2025 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Woodson High School on Friday, November 21 during Returns at 9:45 AM in Cavalier Hall. It will last for both Return periods and conclude around 11:15AM.

Registration for the WLCBE is now open and closes on Friday, October 17, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.

To register your student for the exam, please turn in the Notification of Registration Opportunity WLCBE Form (available in eight different languages). You may print, complete, and sign the form and then have your student turn the form into their counselor in Student Services. Or, you may complete the form, scan it, and then email it to your student’s assigned counselor.

For additional information about the WLCBE, and to view a list of the languages offered on the exam, please visit the FCPS WLCBE website. This google form also contains detailed information about the WLCBE including links to a practice test in the AVANT testing platform.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school counselor

SEL Screening

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Woodson High School students in grades 9-12 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring. The Fall SEL Screener date is Thursday, October 23, during 3rd Return.

Parents/guardians may request that their student not participate in the SEL Screener on an annual basis. This can be done via the Parent Digital Consent System OR by completing the Fairfax County Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Request Form, which is attached to this message below. If completing the form, please return it to your child’s school counselor (either by scanning and emailing it, or having your child bring it to the Student Services office). The deadline to submit the opt-out form is Wednesday, October 22.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE. For more information about the SEL Screener, including information on opting out, please see the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

PSAT/NMSQT

On Wednesday, October 8, all Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) high schools will have a two-hour early release schedule.

  • 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT/NMSQT exam.

High school academy courses and shuttles will be canceled on this day. FCPS will provide regular bus transportation in the morning and after the early release.

Student Services Information

Immunization Requirements for Seniors

Immunizations are required for all students entering 12th grade this fall. Visit FCPS’ immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.

Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

Please contact Woodson Registrar, Darlene Sheppard at dmsheppard@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Counselors Corner

Ninth grade students received the Signs of Suicide (SOS) lesson to learn how to spot symptoms of depression in themselves and others, and to discern what to do if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. Counselors and Clinicians supported students’ emotional wellness as a follow up. We encourage you and your student to bookmark our Social/Emotional padlet which offers emergency information and resources for mental health support, including Hazel Telemental Health, which provides free virtual therapy for your student. You may refer your student directly. It also links to our Woodson Wellness google site for students to use when they need brain breaks and stress relief. Students may bring wired earbuds to connect to the resources with sound.

Counselors visited freshmen this week through their Social Studies classes to discuss ways in which counselors support students, how to see their counselor, how to get connected to Woodson, and to review proper communication etiquette. Additionally, we reviewed helpful resources on the Freshman padlet. We will be delivering a few lessons throughout the fall to ensure our 9th grade students have a strong start to high school.

National Merit Semi-Finalists have been notified and should come to Student Services to collect their certificate. Congratulations!

Reminder! We require 20 school days to process transcripts. The Nov 1 college transcript deadline requires that seniors request by Sept 30! Please plan ahead and use the senior padlet to access forms and resources.

Students who are proficient in another language and are interested in testing to earn up to 3 credits may take the FCPS World Language Credit Exam. Interested students may complete this registration form and return it to their counselor by Oct. 15. No late registrations can be accepted.
