RVES News and Notes - September 12

September 12 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We hope you are doing well! We were thrilled to have such a large turnout at our first PTA meeting of the year. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. Our next meeting will be October 6 and will be held virtually. We hope to see you online!

This week, students across all grade levels have been engaging with our math curriculum by collecting and analyzing data in their classrooms. They are building their skills for data collection and exploring different ways to represent information.

We also had a successful Early Release Wednesday, thank you for your support in helping ensure a smooth afternoon for students and staff.

In addition, some of our special education classes had the opportunity to participate in music therapy this week. Students enjoyed incorporating fun, interactive activities while building on their knowledge and skills.

Finally, a reminder that today is Chalk the Walk! We hope you are able to join us for this fun community event, a flyer is pictured below with all the details.

We are also looking forward to welcoming all families to our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 18. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers and learn more about what’s ahead for the school year.

Have a great weekend.

September is Attendance

Awareness Month!!!

Attendance Matters at Rolling Valley:

At Rolling Valley, we know that being at school every day makes a big difference in your child’s learning and success. As part of our School Improvement Plan, we are working to keep our chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by June 2026. To get there, we’re focusing on strong school-wide attendance practices, partnering closely with families, and making sure students get the support they need to be in school consistently. Together, we can help every child thrive through regular attendance!

There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Visit our website for more attendance tips and resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

The health room conducts vision and hearing screenings for students in Kindergarten, and 3rd grade, as well as for students newly enrolled in the school system or those referred by a teacher, according to state law and FCPS policy. If a student fails the screening, a health room notification is sent home and parents are advised to seek a follow-up examination from a medical professional. These screenings will begin next week, please make sure your child brings their eyeglasses to school to ensure accurate screening results.

Curriculum Night - Oct. 8!

We’re Excited for the Start of a New School Year!

Welcome to a new year of learning and growth! In our annual AAP Fall Newsletter, you’ll find information about the many ways students can access Advanced Academic Program (AAP) curriculum and resources.

During Curriculum Night on Wednesday, October 8, from 5:30–7:30 PM, a review of the AAP Continuum of Services and overview of our program will be shared. In addition, families will have the opportunity to participate in literacy and math rotations alongside the AAP session.

Parents are welcome to attend all sessions to get a comprehensive look at the exciting work happening in our classrooms, or pick and choose the sessions that are most relevant to their family.

We look forward to seeing you there!

🔧🌱 Calling All Recyclables!

Help Fuel Creativity in STEAM 🎨⚙️

Our students are diving into exciting engineering and STEAM projects this year, and we need your help to stock our makerspaces with materials that spark imagination and innovation!

We are collecting clean recycled items that students can transform into prototypes, models, and creative designs. Examples include:

  • Cardboard tubes, boxes, and egg cartons
  • Plastic bottle caps and containers
  • Paper towel rolls and cereal boxes
  • Small jars, lids, and other reusable odds and ends

By donating your recyclables, you’re giving students the tools to design, problem-solve, and bring their ideas to life—all while helping the planet. A collection bin will be available in the school lobby throughout the year.

Thank you for supporting our young engineers, artists, and scientists as they explore and create!

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS

At Rolling Valley, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Reid

  • Friday, December 5
  • Tuesday, December 9
  • Thursday, December 11
