The Dunne Dispatch (Community Engagement Update) - 09/12/2025

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am writing to provide an update on community meetings for the Comprehensive School Boundary Review.

On September 4, 2025, FCPS published a schedule of community meetings in September and October. FCPS did not specify a location for most of the meetings, but West Potomac HS was listed as the location for the September 16 meeting. I was contacted by families who were concerned about a conflict with Back-to-School events at Bucknell ES and Hollin Meadows ES, so I engaged with the Superintendent to resolve the conflict. I am pleased to report that FCPS has canceled the community meeting at West Potomac HS on September 16. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

The current schedule is:

  • Monday, September 15, 6:30-8 PM, Justice HS
  • Tuesday, September 16, 7-8:30 PM, Centreville HS
  • Wednesday, September 17, 6:30-8 PM, Oakton HS
  • Thursday, September 18, 7-8:30 PM, West Potomac HS
  • Friday, September 19, 12:30-2 PM, Sully Community Center
  • Friday, September 19, 6:30-8 PM, Madison HS
  • Wednesday, September 24, 7-8:30 PM, South Lakes HS
  • Thursday, September 25, 6:30-8 PM, South County HS
  • Friday, September 26, 6:30-8 PM, Woodson HS
  • Saturday, September 27, 9-10:30 AM, Marshall HS
  • Monday, September 29, 6:30-8 PM, Lake Braddock SS
  • Tuesday, September 30, 6:30-8 PM, Edison HS

I was surprised that FCPS planned to hold meetings in September because the revised maps (or scenarios) will not be published until early October. Many constituents shared my concern and expressed their strong preference for FCPS to hold community meetings after the revised maps are published. I engaged with the Superintendent to understand the intent, and she clarified the purpose of the meetings, which I have described below.

The September community meetings will be held before the revised maps are published. These meetings will focus on boundary-related issues, such as school start times and transportation. There are 12 meetings. Each meeting will be a "paired" meeting meaning that it will include two high school pyramids.

The October community meetings will be held after the revised maps are published. These meetings will focus on the revised maps and solicit community input on the maps. There are 12 meetings. Each meeting will be a "paired" meeting meaning that it will include two adjoining high school pyramids. For example, I expect FCPS to hold a single meeting for West Potomac HS and Mount Vernon HS together. I also expect FCPS to hold a single meeting for Hayfield SS and South County HS.

To summarize, if you are in the West Potomac HS pyramid, I expect there to be one meeting including West Potomac HS in September and another meeting including West Potomac HS in October. The same is true for every high school pyramid in Fairfax County, to include Edison HS, Hayfield SS, Lewis HS, Mount Vernon HS, and South County HS. Bottom line, every high school pyramid will have the opportunity to participate in a community meeting after the revised maps are published in early October.

You are welcome to attend any or all community meetings. To date, there have been three rounds of community meetings. For each round, FCPS has developed a standard set of slides and talking points, so the same information is presented at every community meeting. In other words, if you are unable to attend a community meeting on a particular date, you can receive the same information by attending a community meeting on a later date.
