Dear Dranesville Families:
Now the school year is in full swing, I hope your students and the entire family have settled into a good routine. Building good habits now will lead to success through the year.
Please take advantage of multiple ways to engage with FCPS. Dr. Reid will hold her Community Conversations this fall and winter, with locations coming soon.
FCPS is continuing the comprehensive boundary review work with opportunities for additional community input. All the meeting locations have been finalized. Please consider attending these meetings, either virtually or in-person. The September meetings will provide an overview of the comprehensive boundary process. In October, the Boundary Explorer Tool should be updated with the latest draft boundary scenarios to allow for community input.
The September comprehensive boundary review public meetings will also provide an update on the K-12 School Start Times Project. FCPS is currently reviewing school start and end times for all grades as part of the comprehensive review. You can view the slide presentation for the September meetings with details on the proposed changes on the Community Boundary Review Meetings page. Please consider providing feedback on the two proposed scenarios by filing out the School Start Times Survey. More information can be found below.

Fairfax County Public Schools Remain Excellent and Continue to Surpass State Average in SOL Scores Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Standards of Learning (SOL) 2025 results show the division continuing to significantly outperform state averages. FCPS made gains in all three federally reported subject areas in 2025 compared to 2024, with improvements for most students across subjects. These consistent improvements were in spite of the fact that both reading and mathematics saw new, more rigorous SOL tests this year.
 |
-
Reading: FCPS maintained strong results with pass rates of 78% in 2023 and 2024, rising to 79% in 2025. These scores consistently outpaced the Virginia average (73% in 2023-2024 and 74% in 2025).
-
Mathematics: Pass rates increased steadily from 75% in 2023 to 76% in 2024 and 78% in 2025, remaining several points higher than the Virginia averages (69%, 71%, and 73%, respectively).
-
Science: FCPS pass rates improved from 72% in 2023 to 73% in 2024 and 75% in 2025. FCPS exceeded the state average (67%, 68%, and 71%) each year.
Dr. Reid presented a strategic plan update highlighting the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
- FNS has 1,295 staff members and serves 110,000 meals across 198 sites every day! That incredible statistic includes 31,500 breakfasts, 77,500 lunches, and 1,000 after-school meals.

Considering a Change to K-12 School Start Times
In September 2023, FCPS awarded a contract to Prismatic Services, Inc., to develop a plan for changing middle school start times. The plan explores starting the middle school day at 8 a.m. or after. In order to minimize any cost for this project, elementary and high school start times would need to change as well. Our top priority is doing what is best for our students.
Option 1- Elementary Schools First
- Elementary school proposed bell times
-
7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. OR 8:10 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.
- Middle School proposed bell times
- Secondary School and High School proposed bell times
Option 2- 30 Minutes Later Than Current Times
- Elementary School proposed bell times
-
9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. OR 9:50 a.m. to 4:35 p.m.
- Middle School proposed bell times
- High School proposed bell times
- Secondary School proposed bell times
Providing feedback opportunities for families, staff, students, and community members is a critical part of this effort. In September 2025, FCPS staff members are sharing a brief K-12 School Start Times presentation during community boundary review meetings. Staff also provided a QR code to participate in a short survey regarding the proposed start and end time options noted above. Hard copies of the survey are available as needed.
FCPS Finalizes Purchase of Private School Site to Support Western Fairfax County
On Friday, August 15, FCPS finalized the purchase of the site of the former King Abdullah Academy in Herndon, Virginia. At a June 12 School Board meeting, the Fairfax County School Board voted to approve the purchase and sale agreement for acquisition of the land and building, including all furniture, technology, and equipment, for $150 million. As the division works to balance the critical need to expand education offerings in the western part of the county with our stewardship of taxpayer dollars, we could not pass up this opportunity. Current estimates for FCPS to buy land and build a new school in that area exceed $430 million.

Read the materials about the new Western HS , and watch the new Western HS discussion video starting at timestamp 1:13:05.
Know Our Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.
Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.
Anonymous Safety Tip Line
If your tip is an emergency and you need immediate assistance, please dial 911.
If you or your child have concerns or information related to feeling unsafe in any way at school, please report them to the FCPS Office of Safety and Security safety tip line. You can access it anonymously online, by text (888-777; Keyword TIP FCPS), or by phone (571-423-2020).
Students, staff, parents/caregivers, and community members should report school safety issues such as threats, unsafe or dangerous situations, illegal drug activity, theft, gang activity, the existence of weapons, vandalism, and concerns about student wellness. Tip line users may identify themselves or remain anonymous.
If you have concerns about programs, regulations, policies, or other topics that do not impact the safety of our schools, please contact the FCPS ombuds online, at 571-423-4014, or ombuds@fcps.edu.
FCPS Maintain Excellence, Continue to Surpass Average SOL Scores
FCPS’s Standards of Learning (SOL) 2025 results show the division is continuing to significantly outperform state averages. In addition, the annual pass rates released by the Virginia Department of Education on August 27 illustrate how FCPS has made year-on-year gains across all three core subject areas of science, math, and reading. These impressive results reflect the hard work of our staff, our students, and their supportive families.
Apply for Free and Reduced Meals
Families that are earning less than 185% of the poverty level can receive breakfast and lunch for their students at no cost through the Free and Reduced Meals (FRM) program.
The application for FRM must be completed each school year and is available for the 2025-26 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
See Where Your Child Goes Online with Lightspeed
Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.
The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Herndon MS
Thank you to the Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for their incredible kindness and support! The treats in the teacher's lounge meant a lot to our teachers—it was a simple gesture that truly made their day!
Longfellow MS
Three eighth graders from Longfellow Middle School saved the life of one of their fathers after learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the classroom. In March, the boys — Davin Lee, Raphael Loosen, and Avi Yoshimizu — were on a Boy Scouts outing to earn their mountain biking merit badges. Three miles in, however, and something went terribly wrong with Davin’s dad, Laurent. While Avi emotionally supported Davin, Raphael and some parents took turns giving Laurent CPR, and continued to do so for at least ten minutes until paramedics arrived. Laurent is now on his way to a full recovery.
Raphael and his classmates receive yearly lessons on CPR from Gwyneth’s Gift. The foundation, which raises awareness of both CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), teaches hands-only CPR at schools across the Commonwealth of Virginia, including several schools in FCPS.
Coates ES
We are so grateful to the Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, for stocking our teachers’ lounge last week with plenty of treats and drinks! Your generosity gave our teachers just the boost they needed, and we truly appreciate your thoughtful support of our school community.
Haycock ES
Many thanks to Brendan and Isabella of Pulch Murals, TJ students who are sharing their beautiful artwork in Haycock ES's cafeteria.

- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.
