Principals’ Corner
This week, we want to highlight an important tool we use to foster a positive school culture: the Saratoga Elementary Behavior Matrix. This guide helps us work together as Stallions to "create a safe, caring, inclusive community." The matrix provides consistent expectations for student behavior in every area of our school.
For the first quarter of the school year, we will have a special focus on what it means to Be Safe at Saratoga. Teachers will be explicitly teaching, modeling, and reinforcing these safe behaviors with students.
These expectations are tailored for all our spaces, from the bathrooms and cafeteria to the hallways and outdoor areas. For instance, in the cafeteria, students are reminded to eat their own food and throw away all their trash. In the hallways, we ask students to give personal space and move with their class.
Please take a moment to review the full Behavior Matrix with your child. Discussing these expectations at home, especially what it means to be safe at school, helps reinforce what they are learning. It is incredibly helpful when you use the same language at home, as it creates a consistent message for our students. We appreciate your continued support.

Picture Day
Picture Day is September 18, remind your children to pack their smiles!
Lake Braddock Production
Looking for something fun and family-friendly to do with you and your family? Look no further than Lake Braddock Theatre's fall production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows the love story of four confused Athenians, a wacky bunch of actors preparing their play for the upcoming royal wedding, and a forest full of magical fairies who tend to disrupt the natural order of the human world. This show is set around a PG-rating and will perform on October 30th, 31st, and November 1st! A special addition, those who come on October 31st, Halloween, will be able to get a photo with their favorite cast members! Costumes are encouraged. Tickets can be purchased at lbtheatre.com. We hope to see you there!
Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.
⚠️ Know Our Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

If students, staff, or families have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
Every Day Counts: Setting Your Child Up for SuccessSeptember is Attendance Awareness Month. There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Esta semana, queremos destacar una herramienta importante que utilizamos para fomentar una cultura escolar positiva: la Matriz de Comportamiento de la Escuela Primaria Saratoga. Esta guía nos ayuda a trabajar juntos como Stallions para crear una comunidad segura, solidaria e inclusiva. La matriz proporciona expectativas consistentes para el comportamiento estudiantil en todas las áreas de nuestra escuela.
Nuestras expectativas se basan en tres principios simples pero importantes:
Ser Seguro: Esto implica acciones como mantener las manos y los pies en su sitio, usar un cuerpo seguro y caminar con calma.
Ser Solidario: Demostramos ser solidarios al usar palabras amables, ayudar y pensar en los demás.
Ser Parte de la Comunidad: Esto incluye usar los útiles escolares de forma responsable, mantener los espacios limpios e incluir a los demás.
Durante el primer trimestre del año escolar, nos centraremos especialmente en lo que significa Ser Seguro en Saratoga. Los maestros enseñarán, modelarán y reforzarán explícitamente estos comportamientos seguros con los estudiantes.
Estas expectativas se adaptan a todos nuestros espacios, desde los baños y la cafetería hasta los pasillos y las áreas exteriores. Por ejemplo, en la cafetería, se les recuerda a los estudiantes que coman su propia comida y tiren toda la basura. En los pasillos, les pedimos que den su espacio personal y se muevan con la clase.

Simulacros de Seguridad Durante el Año EscolarMantener a los estudiantes y al personal seguros es una prioridad para FCPS. Cada escuela tiene un plan de preparación de emergencia para responder a incidentes como incendios y tornados. La ley estatal requiere que las escuelas practiquen simulacros de emergencia, incluyendo simulacros de encierro, cada año. Las escuelas también están obligadas a notificar a los padres y tutores al menos 24 horas antes de que una escuela lleve a cabo un simulacro de cierre. Sin embargo, las escuelas no están obligadas a comunicar con antelación la fecha y hora concretas del simulacro.El primer simulacro de seguridad del año escolar debe realizarse dentro de los primeros 20 días de clases. Cada Día Cuenta: Preparando a su Hijo para el Éxito
Septiembre es el Mes de la Concientización de la Asistencia a Clases. Existen muchas formas en las cuales los padres y cuidadores pueden ayudar a sus niños a crear rutinas saludables y a crear el hábito de asistir puntualmente, cada día, a clases. Algunos ejemplos de estas formas incluyen:
- Establezca rutinas para acostarse y levantarse (¿Necesita ayuda haciéndolo? Descargue esta lista de pasos en inglés o español).
- Prepare su ropa y su mochila la noche antes.
- Si su niño se siente ansioso acerca de ir a la escuela, hable con sus maestros, consejeros u otros padres para que reciba consejos sobre cómo hacerles sentir cómodos y entusiasmados de aprender.
- Haga planes de contingencia para llegar a la escuela en caso de que algo inesperado ocurra. Pídale ayuda a algún familiar, a un vecino o a otro padre.
- Siempre que pueda, evite hacer citas médicas o viajes largos cuando haya clases.
