September 12, 2025
Greetings, Panther Families:
From September 15 through October 15, we proudly celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month—a time to honor the many contributions, diverse cultures, and rich histories of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have shaped our nation and community. Throughout the month, we will recognize and highlight these influences with our students.
We are now halfway through the 1st Quarter. Please continue to monitor your child’s grades and daily attendance—bell to bell—via ParentVUE to ensure they remain on track and are making the most of their learning experiences. Our Panthers continue to impress me with their curiosity, engagement, and love of learning.
This year, our schoolwide fundraiser will once again be World’s Finest Chocolate. We will kick off the excitement with a Pep Rally on Wednesday, September 17. Chocolate sales officially begin on Thursday, September 18. Permission slips and additional details will be sent home with students on Wednesday, and administration will share more information during our Back-to-School Night (BTSN). We hope to see you there!
Finally, our Panthers continue to embrace our theme: One Team, One Goal: When Panthers unite, we all shine bright! Together, we celebrate our diversity, strengthen our community, and show that at LHMS, AWESOME is the new normal!
Take good care, Principal Mizell

September is Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time for our school community to come together in support of mental health and emotional well-being. Middle school can be a challenging time, and families play a key role in recognizing signs, fostering connection, and helping students feel safe and supported. By working together, we can build a culture of hope, awareness, and care—both for our children and ourselves. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) also hosts Out of the Darkness Community Walks to raise awareness and promote prevention.
Social-Emotional Learning with Second Step
During this week’s SEL lesson, your child explored what motivation is and why it matters. They reflected on why they feel motivated to do certain things but not others.
Engage at home: Tell your child about something that motivates you and why. Ask them what activities they feel motivated to do and what makes those activities enjoyable or important to them.
Military Affiliation Survey
Langston Hughes Middle School appreciates all of our military and foreign service families, present and past! Please complete this form to communicate your military or foreign service affiliation with us. This will help us keep you up to date on events throughout the year.
AAP Fall Screening:
Students who are new to FCPS as of January 1, 2025 may go through Fall screening for full-time AAP services. Referrals are due no later than October 15, 2025. Please contact your school's AART, Ashley Martin, at ammartin@fcps.edu for more information.
Panthers Reading during FLEX:
Our LHMS students have time each week during Flex for independent reading. Reading books they choose has countless benefits for students’ academic success, wellness, and connections to others. Please support Read & Recharge time by making sure that your student has a print book or magazine in their backpack each day; they can bring one from home or can borrow one from our school library at any time. Ask your student what they’re reading!

Yearbook Pictures
If you want your child to appear in the yearbook, please make sure you are reminding them about picture days on October 29 and 30 during PE classes. There will be a make-up day on December 2, 2025. If your child is absent on picture day, then they need to report to get their photo taken on the make-up day in order to have their picture in our yearbook. Elementary school photos do not transfer over like you may see in SIS/ParentVue. If they do not take a picture, their picture and name will not be in the yearbook.
After-School Procedures: What to Expect
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Please make sure you know if and where your student plans to be after school. If your student stays after school, here’s what you and your student can expect:
- At dismissal, students report directly to the cafeteria.
- They find their club’s table, sit down, and sign in using their computer (the sign-in link is on the Student All Schoology page).
- Students locate their name on the list (alphabetical by grade, then by club session) and submit the form.
- After signing in, they wait for their club sponsor or teacher to pick them up.
- The first session ends at 3:30 PM. Students return to the cafeteria for a snack.
- After snack, students either go to a second session or prepare to go home.
- At 4:30 PM, all students return to the cafeteria to wait for late buses or exit the building.
Currently, all sports clubs are intramural. Students do not need a physical to participate in intramural sports—physicals are only required for sports teams that play other schools. Sports team tryout dates will be announced. Basketball is offered in the fall, Futsal in the winter, and Volleyball in the spring.
Students can find their late bus information in StudentVUE. The process for finding this information can be found on the After-School Schedule link.
Thank you for supporting your student’s participation in our after-school programs! If you have any questions, please contact us
