Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We have some incredibly exciting news! We have officially launched our new Cubbie Den System, a school-wide initiative designed to build an even stronger sense of belonging and community among all our students. This system is a way for us to connect across grade levels and celebrate our shared school spirit.

On Monday, we kicked off with a special Cubbie Nation News broadcast that introduced our Den system. Our Dens will come together throughout the school year to continue our focus on C.A.R.E.S. expectations, Positivity Project character traits, and building connections with students and staff across grade levels. Our four Cubbie Dens are: the Den of Adventure, the Den of Discovery, the Den of Exploration, and the Den of Wonder.

Our entire student body then came together for a special assembly. The energy during our school-wide assembly was electric as our students learned which Den they would be in!

We capped off the assembly by celebrating our collective achievement of a school-wide goal for 1,000 C.A.R.E.S. tickets. Each den came together outside to celebrate our success with popsicles! Our students came home with their Den bracelets, so be sure to ask them what Den they are in.

This is just the beginning of what we know will be a truly impactful experience for our students. The Den system will provide ongoing opportunities for collaboration, friendly competition, and support throughout the school year. We are so excited for this new chapter and look forward to seeing all the ways our students will continue to grow and thrive in their new dens.

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

September 11 National Day of Service

With the upcoming 24th anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills

Advanced Academics Parent Information Night

We will be hosting a parent information session on Thursday, September 25 from 6:00-7:00 PM in our library. Naomi Egerton-Baker, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, will provide an overview about the continuum of Advanced Academic services and review the screening process for full-time Advanced Academic services for students in grades 2 through 6.

If your child is new to Fairfax County (enrolled after January 2025) in grades 3-6 and you want your child screened for full time advanced academic services, the fall deadline is October 15, 2025.

For additional resources, you can also visit the Cub Run website. Please reach out to Ms. Egerton-Baker with any questions. (nhegertonbak@fcps.edu)

Attendance Matters

Every Day Counts: Setting Your Child Up for SuccessSeptember is Attendance Awareness Month. There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 27 - October 5, 2025, and throughout the year!

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or families have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Reminders

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS

At Cub Run Elementary, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
