Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Greetings, SoCo family,
As we step into another busy week at South County, we pause to reflect on an important moment in our nation’s history. This Thursday marked the anniversary of September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed us and reminds us of the courage, unity, and resilience that define the American spirit. We encourage our Stallion family to take a moment to honor those who lost their lives, the heroes who responded, and the enduring strength of our communities. Together, let’s carry forward that spirit of compassion and resolve as we continue to build a safe, supportive, and thriving school for all.
School Culture
Victory Vibes on the Court: Congratulations to our Freshmen and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams for their exciting wins over AC! Their teamwork and determination lit up the court like a spark that fuels Stallion pride. We’re hoping they keep riding that wave of momentum as they power through the season — we’re so proud of this outstanding team!
Setting the Bar: Boys VB Brilliance:
Bravo to our Boys Volleyball team who battled through five tough sets and came away with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over West Springfield. The team showed incredible mental toughness, never backing down and proving that focus and resilience make the difference when the game is on the line. Congratulations to our Stallions for playing with heart, hustle, and pride — way to represent South County!”
Sources of Strength Shines:
Sources of Strength is a student-led group focused on building resilience, spreading hope, and strengthening connections across our school. Our recent assembly was a shining success, spotlighting the many ways we can lift one another up. Like links in a strong chain, each of us adds resilience and positivity to our school community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this uplifting event possible!
Senior Spotlight: Stallions Stand Tall:
What a sensational morning celebrating our seniors at their class assembly and group photo! A special shout out goes to the officers on the class, Kayla, Ava, Abigail, Avery, and Michaella, as well as the faculty sponsors, Mrs. Palaschak and Mrs. Krishnamurthy. Great content was shared about events to look forward to for the year. The laughter, leadership, and lasting memories captured there remind us that the Class of 2026 is racing toward graduation with grace and grit. Keep leading the pack, Stallions — your final year is off to a stellar start!
Staff Spotlight: Welcome to Our New Dean of Students
Mrs. Javklan is a proud NOVA resident and the product of a military family of musicians. She began her teaching career in Prince William County in 2003 and moved to FCPS in 2008, serving in several pyramid schools before spending the past 13 years at West Potomac High School as orchestra director, piano instructor, category B music teacher, and music department chair. In addition to her classroom work, she has served on Behavior Intervention, Equity, Safety and Security, Academic Intervention, and Attendance teams, always striving to create the best environment for students and staff. She is excited to bring her experience and energy to South County as Dean of Students.
Outside of school, Mrs. Javklan enjoys an active family life with her husband and their three children—Zorig, Buuvei Baatar, and Anu. Together, they love camping, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and pickleball, and they are also active in their church and Mongolian community. Pronounced “Jav-klon” (with a short a), her name often sparks curiosity. She continues to play the cello locally and mentor young musicians. Mrs. Javklan is thrilled to join our Stallion family.
Coach's Corner:
At SOCO, we’re specifically looking at providing feedback that focuses on student effort and perseverance, not just the final outcome. Teachers are holding discussions about how mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth. This mindset helps students develop resilience and understand that effort is a key component of success, both in the student’s academic journey and in their home life. If you are looking for a conversation-starter with your student, ask them about the type of feedback they are receiving in classes.
That’s it for this week. I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend.

Tag Day is Saturday, September 13!!
Tag Day is TOMORROW, Saturday, September 13!!
Tag Day is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the South County Performing Arts Department. It takes thousands of dollars more than the fees that are charged for each group to keep our band, orchestra, choir, and theater programs running at the high levels we are accustomed to. To keep our fees low and keep the performing arts in our schools, we depend on contributions from our incredible community.
Student teams will be coming to your door TOMORROW, Saturday, September 13 asking for tax-deductible contributions to “Support the Arts.” Thank you in advance to everyone who donates to our Performing Arts department! Donations can be made at https://bit.ly/SOCOTAGDAY. We hope to see you at one of our many performing arts productions here at SCHS. Check the SCHS website for upcoming events.
Volunteer FCPS
New Volunteer Management System – Volunteer FCPS
FCPS has launched a new system to help ensure student and staff safety. Effective immediately:
- If you plan to volunteer more than twice this school year, or chaperone a field trip, you must register in Volunteer FCPS.
- The process involves multiple steps and cannot be completed last minute, so we encourage you to start early.
Volunteer Levels
-
Level 1 – Infrequent volunteers (monthly or less frequent) who are always supervised do not need a criminal background check. However, they do need a sex offender registry check, which is performed by signing in at the school's visitor kiosk.
-
Level 2 – Frequent, ongoing, or regular volunteers (daily, weekly, bi-weekly) who are also always supervised are subject to the same requirements as Level 1—no criminal background check, but a sex offender registry check via the kiosk is mandatory.
-
Level 3- Volunteers with direct, unsupervised interaction with students must complete a criminal background check, including fingerprints and child abuse and neglect checks. This applies to roles like mentors, tutors, or field trip chaperones who are alone with students (not accompanied by an FCPS staff member) at any time during the activity.
How to Register as a Volunteer:
-
Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
-
Register in the FCPS Volunteer Portal
- Select “Schools”
- Search for South County High School or click here
- Sign up for available opportunities (You can register as a general volunteer to start).
-
Choose Your Volunteer Level (NEW) – If you might volunteer at a higher level later, we recommend registering as Level 3 now.
All volunteers (new or returning) must:
- Register in Volunteer FCPS
- Complete volunteer orientation
- Sign in through the visitor kiosk at each visit
- Complete a background check if required
For full details, visit the Volunteer FCPS website

Concession Stand Volunteers
We are excited for the Fall sports season and we NEED your help! In order for us to keep our concession stand up and running we need volunteers to assist us on game nights. The revenue generated through concessions serves as the SCHS Athletic Booster Club's primary source of funding. The money earned goes right back to the sports teams to cover the costs of equipment, uniforms, and more! Any family can volunteer! You do not need to have a student participating in Sports to make an impact! Visit the link below and consider helping us out one night! Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

AWARENESS
Constitution Day
On September 17 of each year, schools must hold an educational program in honor of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Schools determine what kind of educational programs are appropriate for their students. Learning experiences may be schoolwide or enacted through selected content or grade levels. Administrators should work with their social studies lead teachers to meet this requirement for Constitution and Citizenship Day.
-
Information about citizenship and civics is also available at other websites such as the National Constitution Center. Administrators should work with their social studies lead teachers to meet this requirement for Constitution and Citizenship Day.
FCPS social studies has developed an instructional resource document to support classrooms. Teachers can use these resources to meet each student's needs.
Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Monday, September 22. That day is an evening-only observance day. Important events will not be held after school.
Tuesday, September 23, is a holiday for all FCPS students and staff. Schools and offices will be closed.

September 27 to October 5 - Blue Star Welcome Week
Blue Star Welcome Week is a nationwide initiative to ensure military families feel a sense of belonging to their school communities. Fairfax County Public Schools will be intentionally celebrating and acknowledging Blue Star Welcome Week.
Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity to empower military families to thrive as they serve. There are approximately 13,500 military-connected students enrolled in FCPS. Each year, one-third of our military families transition into or out of our district. Blue Star Welcome Week gives schools an opportunity to welcome and connect with their military families. The goal is to create a sense of belonging and ensure that our military families feel celebrated and welcomed into their school communities.
