A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Community,
It was delightful to see so many of you at our Back-to-School Night last Wednesday. We truly enjoyed welcoming new families and witnessing the joy on our students' faces as they proudly showcased their classrooms and introduced you to their teachers. A special thank you to the PTA for their flexibility in relocating indoors due to the wet field. One vendor even mentioned that out of the 100+ Back-to-School Nights she's attended, this was the most enjoyable!
We are excited to invite you to our first PTA meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 16th, at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be held in person at Daniels Run. Our school administrators will be there for a meet-and-greet, and the evening will provide you a great opportunity to become more involved in our school community and explore various volunteering options.
Thank you for being a partner in your child’s learning. I hope to see you on Tuesday!
Warmest regards,
Susan Mullen, Principal

If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact our front office for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.
🩹 Immunization Requirements
Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure that your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Tuesday, November 18, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.
You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to our front office. Find more information on immunizations.
📋 Permission Forms
Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. They can also change how student information is managed.Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. Watch a video to see how to use the tool.
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)
The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned to our front office by Tuesday, September 30.

🏗️ School Bond Referendum on Ballot Tuesday, November 4
The $460 million School Bond Referendum — supporting the division and county’s commitment to providing safe and welcoming learning environments for all students — will be on the Tuesday, November 4, general election ballot.
The funding provided by voter-approved bonds is expected to fund projects identified in the FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program, which was approved by the School Board in February.
The building and renovation of our schools is not funded through the division’s operating budget. Voter-approved bonds allow payment for these projects over time. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Watch this video that explains, “What Is a bond?”

Second Step Elementary
Dear Families,
We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
At Daniels Run, we will soon begin teaching Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following: Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy and Kindness, and Problem Solving.
To help you reinforce the language and skills your child is learning, you’ll receive weekly information from their Second Step teacher. It will include the key concepts for that week and a discussion question that prompts students to practice or talk about the week’s skills with you at home.
If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact us or your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.
Sincerely,
Daniels Run Admin Team
Every Day Counts: Setting Your Child Up for Success
- September is Attendance Awareness Month. There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.
Visit the FCPS website for more attendance tips and resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

AAP Parent Information Sessions
Continuum of Services
- Our in-person Parent Information Session will be held on September 25th at 6:00PM in the Library. During this session, we will provide information on the continuum of AAP services for all students at Daniels Run. (Grades K-6)
Screening and Identification for Full-Time AAP
- Our in-person Screening and Identification Session will be held on October 9th at 6:00 PM in the library. During this session, we will explain and answer questions about the screening process for part-time school-based and full-time Level IV services. (Grades 2-6)
Beginning in October 2025, elementary and middle schools will implement the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) as our universal abilities screener in grade 2 and for selected students in grades 3-7. This assessment measures a student's general intellectual ability in three key areas: verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative. Abilities tests are differentiated from achievement tests as students should not be preparing for the assessment. Individual schools will be sending notification letters to families whose students are scheduled to participate in this assessment. Families can reference the testing requirements for each grade level in FCPS the Grade Level Tests page on the FCPS website.
Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
At Daniels Run ES, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit [Volunteer FCPS], click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
