Important Dates

Sept 17    Fall Picture Day

Sept 18    Back to School Night - Curriculum Information, 6:30 p.m.

Sept 23    Holiday: No School - Rosh Hashanah

Specialist Spotlight - Counseling

With our Mustangs back after the long summer break, we began by revisiting guidance lessons on emotional awareness and self-regulation. Students learned (or re-learned) more about the Zones of Regulation and explored the four feeling colors through books and hands-on activities.

We always remind students that all feelings are okay, but it’s important to practice strategies that help them return to the green zone—a place of calm focus—using school-appropriate and healthy behaviors. Some strategies we’ve practiced include Lazy 8 Breathing, taking a classroom break to read, drawing or coloring, listening to calming music, or working on puzzles.

In addition, we’ve been talking about the importance of including others and making kind choices. Through scenarios and role-play, students have also been practicing empathy and perspective-taking. These activities help them strengthen self-awareness while also learning to notice and respond to the needs of others.

Donation

Thanks to Eagle Tae Kwon Do and Master Jae for the generous donation of school supplies for our children here at Bren Mar Park!

Edison HS

Edison HS is continuing the Feeder Night Tradition! Elementary students are welcome to run the field at approximately 6:45 p.m. on September 19, 2025. They hand out shirts and have some activities prior to the run. Edison would love for BMP students and their families to join them!

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS

At Bren Mar Park, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit  Volunteer FCPS website , click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

New Math Screening and Growth Assessment for Elementary Students

Starting in September, FCPS elementary schools will use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math assessment to assess grade level mathematics skills in grades 1-6. The MAP Math test along with the iReady Reading test fulfill a state requirement to measure academic growth in grades 3-6 throughout the school year.

MAP Math tests are administered in the fall, winter, and spring. They help teachers identify students' strengths and areas where they may need more support.

Families can learn more about MAP Growth assessments by visiting the MAP Test Information webpage.

What to expect on picture day

  1. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  2. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  3. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  4. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home.

2e students

Twice-Exceptional (2e) learners are students who are gifted and have learning challenges or disabilities.

2e students can thrive when...

  • Individualized & flexible instruction is responsive to students’ strengths, disabilities, and challenges.
  • Supports, accommodations, and/or services help them access instruction and demonstrate
  • Social-emotional learning and accompanying strategies build their confidence, skills, resilience, and
  • a sense of belonging.
  • Collaborative teams (including the student, teachers, support staff, and families) design and adjust
  • plans that affirm their identities and experiences.

We believe strong partnerships and active communication between schools and families are key to supporting 2e students. Together, we:

  • Collaborate in the identification, evaluation, and instructional planning processes to understand
  • student strengths, needs, and goals.
  • Communicate regularly about progress, supports, strategies, and wellness.
  • Engage in decision-making processes about course selection, accommodations, and specialized
  • instruction and/or services (when applicable).
  • Assume collective responsibility to co-create environments where students can thrive.

Family expertise is a critical component of student success. Families are encouraged to:

  • Recognize and celebrate effort as well as achievement.
  • Support your child’s strengths and help them navigate struggles.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to consider and express ways in which they learn best.
  • Teach self-advocacy at home and school.
  • Reach out to the school team if you see signs of stress, withdrawal, or burnout.

Every Day Counts: Setting Your Child Up for Success

  • September is Attendance Awareness Month. There are many ways parents and caregivers can help their children create healthy routines and make a habit of getting to school on time every day. Some examples include:
  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Visit the FCPS website for more attendance tips and resources. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
