Wolf Pack Words

Our school year is off to a strong start! Our classrooms are buzzing with excited learners.

With the upcoming 24th anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.

Monday marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month

We have our first 3-hour early release on Wednesday, September 17th. Please make sure your child knows the plan for dismissal time.

Finally, we want to thank all of our Oak Hill families that attended Back to School Night. Please take a moment to view our FCPS School Board Back to School Messages that are included in this week's newsletter.

In partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Shelia Sobeski, Assistant Principal

Fitness Fridays

We invite you to participate in Fitness Fridays starting September 12th. Students can join Oak Hill staff for a morning walk on the track. This is an excellent opportunity to start your day energized and to promote both physical and mental well-being. We will convene on the blacktop at the back of the school, starting at 8:00 AM. Please note that all students must be accompanied by an adult as this event occurs prior to school hours. We look forward to your participation!

The event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather.

Advanced Academics News

Please mark your calendars for Friday, September 26th from 9:15-10:15 for an AAP information meeting (in person). Mrs. Lahr, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, will be discussing the continuum of Advanced Academics services offered in Fairfax County Public Schools and will briefly be describing the Full-Time screening process. Please RSVP if you wish to attend the presentation on September 26th. This presentation is open to all families in grades K-6.  Families of Full-Time students do not need to attend unless they wish to learn more about the other levels of AAP services available in FCPS.

Another presentation specifically dedicated to the Full-Time referral and screening process  is scheduled on Tuesday, October 28th from 9:15-10:15 (in person). This session is particularly relevant for parents of second graders and those who wish to apply for full-time services. This presentation is open to Grade 2-6 families.

Families who enrolled in FCPS after January 1st, 2025.

Referral window: The deadline for fall 2025 Full-Time AAP referrals for newly enrolled students is October 15, 2025.

  • How to refer: Submit a completed AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Mrs. Lahr, cclahr@fcps.edu, along with additional supporting documentation. More information about the process can be found here.
  • What's included in screening: The screening process for Full-Time AAP is holistic and includes multiple data points, such as the referral form, test scores, parent questionnaire, and work samples.
  •  Fall screening is an opportunity for students who are new to the district to be considered for full-time services beginning in the second semester (February 2026).

View the AAP Fall Newsletter here.

Please continue to check the Wolfpack Weekly for updates. If you have any additional questions, please contact Cathy Lahr, AART, at cclahr@fcps.edu.

Register for Volunteer FCPS

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias or who help in any unpaid capacity in the school system. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Social and Emotional Learning Screening

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school.

Oak Hill Elementary School students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring. After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. Parents may opt their child out through the Parent Digital Consent System or by completing the SEL Screener opt out form and returning it by October 3.

You can  learn more on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Parent Culture Panel

Do you have a unique cultural perspective that you'd like to share with teachers and staff? We're looking for several parents to sit on a panel to discuss how individual cultures are a part of our community. Is there anything you'd like our teachers to know? For example, how different colors can be interpreted by students; holidays and how they are celebrated by your family; cultural norms you'd like us to know so we can better understand our students, etc.

If there are enough volunteers, the panel will be hosted during the first early release Wednesday on September 17th from 12:45-1:45pm. School-age childcare will be provided for participants. Questions? Email secondvp@oakhillpta.org
